Oct. 23, 2016 SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Sophomore Ido Goldschmidt scored seven total goals as No. 9 UC Davis downed Johns Hopkins and No. 14 George Washington by a combined score of 39-7 at the Rodeo men's water polo tournament hosted jointly by San Jose State and Santa Clara. The Aggies opened Sunday's session with a 16-3 victory over the Blue Jays at neraby West Valley College, then headed up Highway 17 to SCU's Sullivan Aquatic Center for a 23-4 win over the Colonials.
The afternoon win sets a school record for margin of victory, while the 23-goal total stands as the program's highest since 1996, when UC Davis posted a 24-12 triumph against UC Santa Cruz. The Aggies, who never trailed in either contest, improve to 18-4 for the season. Goldschmidt and sophomore
Marcus Anderson each scored hat tricks in the opener against JHU. Both players hit one goal in the second, third and fourth quarters. Junior
Cory Laidig and
Eric Martel also added two apiece. Laidig had both of his goals in the first quarter, helping UC Davis craft a 4-1 lead. That edge stretched to 7-2 by halftime, thanks to 6-on-5 goals from sophomore
Nick Coufal and Goldschmidt. Anderson netted his second goal on a penalty shot to close the half. Goldschmidt scored a natural goal to start the third quarter and Blue Jay freshman Andreas Katsis converted a five-meter penalty shot on the next possession, but that proved to be the final change to the Hopkins side of the scoreboard. UC Davis proceeded to close out the game with eight unanswered: three in the third quarter, then five in the fourth. Junior goalie
Spencer Creed tallied eight saves in front of the UC Davis cage before handing the chores to sophomore
R.J. Quigley. In Sunday's afternoon game, four Aggies performed hat tricks in the record-setting win. Goldschmidt posted four goals with four assists while Laidig set a career high with four goals. Junior
Morgan Olson-Fabbro and sophomore
Brock Gordon each added three goals, with Gordon supplementing that total with three steals. UC Davis built a 5-0 lead in the first quarter, with sophomore
Sasa Antunovic assisting Goldschmidt on two of those scores. Goldschmidt completed his hat trick by the 4:30 mark of the second, part of three straight goals that stretched the Aggie lead to 8-0. Laidig and sophomore
Riley Venne converted power plays in the second to boost UC Davis to a 12-1 halftime advantage. Anderson assisted on a pair of goals in the third to push UC Davis in front by 17-2 heading into the fourth. Goldschmidt and sophomore
Colter Knight tacked on penalty shots in the final minute. Laidig figured on three consecutive goals to start the fourth: scoring at the 7:35 and 6:08 marks while assisting Martel on another at 6:51. Gordon also hit two of his three goals in the final frame. At 18-4, UC Davis now holds an .818 winning percentage. The school record remains the .824 (14-3) clip posted by Jerry Hinsdale's squad in 1969. The Aggies begin a four-game homestand starting with Saturday's 12:30 contest against No. 8 Pepperdine.
