Oct. 21, 2016 DAVIS, Calif. - Sophomore attacker Marcus Anderson scored four goals while center-defender Riley Venne added a hat trick to lead ninth-ranked UC Davis to a 16-10 win over the U.S. Air Force Academy in Western Water Polo Association men's action at Schaal Aquatics Center Friday afternoon.
The Aggies improve to 14-4 overall and remain unbeaten in conference at 4-0. The Falcons, among the teams receiving votes in the national polls, drops to 4-13 for the year and 0-4 in WWPA play. Anderson scored three goals in UC Davis' six-goal second quarter, then tacked on his fourth tally on a counterattack late in the third quarter. Venne buried two perimeter shots in the first frame, then barred in a shot with a minute left before halftime. Junior
Morgan Olson-Fabbro and sophomores
Sasa Antunovic and
Ido Goldschmidt each chipped in two more goals. For Air Force, juniors Jack Empey and Garrett Fisk each scored two goals. Fisk, a graduate of Davis Senior High, had a hometown following in the Schaal bleachers. Junior
Cory Laidig assisted on goals to Goldschmidt and Olson-Fabbro in a 3-1 start to the contest. Antunovic, who converted a power play in that run, scored his second goal from the three position at the 3:19 mark and Venne fired a missile from the outside to keep the Aggies in front by a 5-2 margin. Air Force senior defender Zack Kamai answered with a goal a minute later to cut the deficit to two, but UC Davis scored five of the next six goals to craft a 10-4 lead by the midway point of the second quarter. Aggie sophomore
Nick Coufal assisted Venne's goal at the 1:05 mark in the second then delivered a long outlet pass to freshman
Yurii Hanley on a counterattack to boost UC Davis to a 13-5 halftime lead. The Aggies maintained at least a seven-goal lead throughout the third quarter.
Carlo Burney's goal from the four spot gave UC Davis its largest lead at 14-5, but the Falcons managed to outscore their hosts in the stanza. Fisk scored back-to-back goals in the third, but a quick-quick 6-on-5 conversion from Aggie captain
Tennyson May and Anderson's goal off a
Holden Tamblyn pass kept the Academy largely out of reach. For all the offense in the first three quarters, Air Force had the only goal for either team in the finale: senior Eric Curia scored after a double-exclusion with less than three minutes remaining. Sophomore goalie
R.J. Quigley, who relieved starter
Spencer Creed, posted four saves in the fourth quarter. UC Davis returns to action at the Rodeo tournament, hosted by Santa Clara and San Jose State. The Aggies face No. 10 Harvard, Wagner, Johns Hopkins and No. 14 George Washington during the weekend-long tourney.
