RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Ashley Marshall won the 100- and 200-meter dashes for the third straight year while Raquel Lambdin won the 800 in addition to her third straight 1,500 as the UC Davis women's track and field team finished solidly in second place at the Big West Championships at UC Riverside on Saturday afternoon.
Lambdin's 1,500 win also come in a school-record time of 4 minutes, 17.09 seconds and was one of two school marks set on Saturday after Cekarri Nixon took second in the 400 in 53.01.
The Aggie men, sparked by a pair of top-three showings from middle distance standout Nathan Strum and third-place individual finishes from Marcus Johnson (100), Trevor Halsted (5,000) and Jason Chandler (400 hurdles), finished in fifth place.
CSUN dethroned the three-time defending champion Aggies atop the women's team podium on Saturday, scoring 212 points to capture first place. UC Davis was all alone in second place with 168 while Cal Poly (102), UC Santa Barbara (80) and the host Highlanders (69) were well back in rounding out the top five.
The Long Beach State men won their third straight Big West championship, scoring 185 points to beat second-place UCSB which had 167. UC Davis, which tallied 92 points, was just three points from placing third. Cal Poly grabbed third place with 95 points while CSUN was close behind with 94. Cal State Fullerton had 66 points and took sixth.
The UC Davis women scored 115 points on the second day, riding double-digit scoring totals in the 100, 200, 800, 1,500 and 5,000 events. Marshall, the two-time defending Big West Women's Track Athlete of the Year, and Lambdin -- who like Marshall is a returning All-American from last year -- posted historic performances.
Marshall, who ran the leadoff leg on the Aggies' second-place 4x100 relay (45.08), raced to a win in the 100 in 11.52 seconds, breaking the stadium record of 11.55 she tied during Friday's prelims. The senior standout returned toward the end of the meet to successfully defend her 200 title -- while leading a 1-2 UC Davis finish with Cekarri Nixon -- with a time of 23.35. Nixon's PR (23.74) was her first below 24 seconds and vaulted her from No. 3 to No. 2 all-time at UC Davis.
Marshall won both events for the third straight year while making Big West history in the process. She's the first woman in the history of the conference to win each event at three straight championships and is the first to capture three consecutive 200 titles. Her 200 time also threatened her school record of 23.25 set during the 2013 Big West Championships.
Lambdin added historic performances of her own, becoming the first woman to win both the 800 and 1,500 at the same conference championship meet since UC Riverside's Brenda Martinez completed her three-year run of doing so in 2012.
Lambdin's third consecutive win in the race nearly beat the meet record of 4:16.40 set by Trena Hull of UNLV in 1987 but did give her the Aggie school record. Lambdin, whose previous PR of 4:20.89 from last year's NCAA West Prelim Meet had her No. 2 all-time at UC Davis, beat Suzy Jones' 1995 mark of 4:19.94.
Lambdin returned to the track later in the day to take a two-second win in the 800 in 2:06.24. It was the first time she's won a Big West title in the race although she was a close second to teammate Shanie Landen last year. Rianna Goins added six points for UC Davis with her third-place finish (2:08.45) that debuts her at No. 5 on UC Davis' all-time top-10 list.
Nixon, who joined Marshall, Emma Redick and Holly Miller on the runner-up 4x100 relay, nearly successfully defended her Big West title in the 400 but had another outstanding effort with her time of 53.01. That broke her school record of 53.26 set at last year's regional meet and puts her atop the all-time list by more than a second over the next closest Aggie (Ugo Eke, 54.11, 2011).
Other points on the track from UC Davis came from steeplechase champion Erika Barr who was sixth in the 1,500, and steeplechase runner-up Clara MacLeod who placed third in the 5,000. Nicole Lane, who was fourth in the 10,000 on Friday night, came back less than 24 hours later to take fifth in the 5K. Redick placed fourth in the 400 hurdles in her debut Big West performance in the event.
The 4x400 relay of Marshall, Nixon, Redick and Rochelle Nadreau added fourth-place points to cap the meet.
Veronica Smart led the Aggies' field contingent with her third-place finish in the shot put that came with a PR mark of 50-10.75. That bettered her previous best by more than an inch and solidified her No. 3 all-time standing at UC Davis. Katie Barber and Morgan Bertsch tied for fourth in the high jump at 5 feet, 7.25 inches and Catherine Li was seventh in the triple jump. Michaela Mundt post a personal-best mark of 185-10 in the hammer throw, finishing fifth. She remains a solid No. 2 on the Aggies' top-10 list. Smart was seventh, just missing her PR but posting a great effort of 179-05.
The UC Davis men, who were third at last year's Big West Championships at Woody Wilson Track, flirted with third place again for much of Saturday. Strum helped the Aggies' cause with his two top-three performances.
Strum scored six points by taking third in a closely contested 1,500 that saw the top three cross barely within a second of each other. Anass Jouhry of CSUN won in 3:53.70 while Strum finished in 3:54.72. He came back two hours later to challenge in the 800, taking second in 1:50.52 behind defending champion Chris Low of Long Beach State (1:48.72).
UC Davis had its strongest presence of any final in that 800 with Cody Nguyen, Trevor Ehlenbach and Alex Grigoriev placing sixth through eighth, respectively. Just three seconds separated the top seven finishers.
Johnson began his day by helping the 4x100 relay, that also included Chandler, Matt Moreno and Hosea Tate, into a second-place finish in 40.77. That showing pushed them to No. 3 all-time at UC Davis. Johnson later set to the track to defend his Big West title in the 100 and came in with a strong third-place time of 10.80 seconds.
Chandler and Halsted added the remaining individual third-place finishes. Chandler scored six points in the 400 hurdles with his PR of of 52.00 that keeps him solidly at No. 3 on the program's all-time list. Halsted, after placing third in the 10k last night, returned for the 5,000 and picked up another third place with his time of 14:43.69.
Moreno scored sixth-place points in the 200 (21.77) and then teamed with Chandler, Brian Thomas and Tate to finish fourth in the meet-ending 4x400. The quartet's time of 3:12.43 makes them the fifth-fastest in school history.
UC Davis scored in three of the four field events contested on Saturday. Matthew Bender posted a season-best mark while taking fourth in the discus. His throw of 172-06 put him over 170 feet for the first time this year and challenged his PR of 176-01. Marc Toney was fifth in the pole vault at 16-0.75 while T.K. Dodds took eighth in the triple jump at 45-2.25.
The Aggies will now prepare for the NCAA West Prelims at the University of Texas in two weeks.
