Sun Angel results

TEMPE, Ariz. - Rianna Goins won the 1,500-meter run, Breanna Standifer had a personal-best throw while capturing the discus and Ben Parodi brought home a first-place in the hammer throw as the UC Davis men's and women's track and field teams took part this weekend in the Sun Angel Classic at Arizona State.

The Aggies also picked up a win by Clara MacLeod in the steeplechase on Friday at the Mesa Track and Field Classic where she and some teammates competed prior to traveling to Arizona State for competition on Friday night and Saturday. The ASU Sun Angel Classic brings together high-level collegiate and open competitors to a meet that features both open and premiere (i.e., invitational) sections.

Goins won the open 1,500 in 4 minutes, 32.81 seconds, beating three runners from BYU and another from Illinois State who rounded out the top five. The time was a season-best for Goins who went 4:35.71 in the season opener at Cal in March.

Standifer won the open section of the discus with a mark of 160 feet, 9 inches which jumped her to No. 4 on the Aggies' career leaders list while also beating her previous PR of 156-1 from the Hornet Invitational last month. Parodi added another throws win for UC Davis, finishing first in the open section of the hammer on Friday with a mark of 189-1. Teammate Matthew Bender was fourth at 181-2.

The Aggies had other notable efforts that produced outstanding marks. Nathan Strum provided one in the premiere section of the 800 with his fourth-place time of 1:49.04. That beat his previous best of 1:49.18 from last year's NCAA West Prelim Meet and solidified his hold on the No. 2 all-time spot at UC Davis.

Raquel Lambdin and Erika Barr had strong races in the premiere 1,500 race on Saturday evening. Lambdin was fourth in a season-best time of 4:22.86 while Barr had a PR of 4:24.82 and finished seventh. In the field events, freshman Morgan Bertsch cleared 5-7.75 in her second collegiate high jump competition and debuts at No. 4 on the Aggies' all-time list.

UC Davis also had a pair of strong showings at Mesa Community College on Friday. MacLeod jumped one spot on the program's all-time list to seventh in the steeplechase after placing first in 10:48.22. Veronica Smart had a PR in the hammer throw, finishing fourth with a mark of 177-06 that bumped her to No. 4 all-time.

UC Davis will be in action next weekend in Southern California. The Aggies are scheduled to compete at the Azusa Pacific Brian Clay Invitational, the Mt. SAC Relays and the Long Beach State Beach Invitational.
