Box Score Sept. 26, 2014 Final Stats
DAVIS, Calif. - Junior Kaylin Squyres notched 13 kills while senior libero Megan Lancaster picked up 11 digs but UC Davis could not continue a third-set comeback, falling in a 25-18, 25-18, 25-18 sweep to No. 25 Hawai'i in Big West Conference women's volleyball action in front of a season-best crowd of 1,136 Friday night at the Pavilion.
The Aggies fall to 5-9 for the year. The Rainbow Wahine, whose only losses have come against nationally ranked foes, move to 9-3 overall. This was the Big West opener for each team.
Squyres had UC Davis' only double-digit offense although redshirt freshman Aima Eichie supplied four kills on eight swings to supplement her team-leading four blocks.
Junior middle blocker Olivia Magill pounded out 10 kills with only two errors in 13 swings to lead Hawai'i with a .615 hitting average. Sophomore Nikki Taylor added a 9-0-19 attacking chart to help the 'Bows compile a .340 overall team average. Libero Sarah Mendoza recorded a match-high 13 digs defensively.
UC Davis struggled offensively in the opening set, committing 10 hitting errors with just seven kills en route to a minus-.091 success rate at the tape. Five of those miscues came in a 5-0 run that allowed the Wahine to pull ahead to an 18-11 edge, effectively sealing the 1-0 match lead. Hawai'i had 14 kills and four team blocks to offset six service errors in the first.
While the 'Bows pulled away late in the first, they jumped out to an early lead in the second. Magill and Tai Manu-Olevao each had two kills in run of six unanswered, crafting a 9-4 edge. Aggie sophomore Allie Wegener helped spark a brief comeback with three kills in a span of eight points to pull UC Davis to within a 17-13 deficit, but a block by Manu-Olevao and senior Kalei Adolpho launched a 3-0 run to hold off the Aggie charge.
While UC Davis returned to a passable .156 hitting average in the second, the Aggies broke loose to a .312 clip in the third. Wegener began the proceedings by serving up the first two points in a 4-0 start. Magill scored a pair of kills to help the Wahine back to 7-7, one of 10 ties in the finale. Manu-Olevao later gave Hawai'i its first lead of the third when she slammed a four-set crosscourt for a kill at 11-10. However, the Aggies reclaimed the advantage on a Walbrecht kill at 16-15. Hawai'i attacked long then Aima Eichie and Walbrecht combined on a block to extend the edge to 18-15.
Manu-Olevao responded yet again, this time with a kill and a block assist to score three straight points in tying the frame at 21-21. The Aggies caught a bad break when a Kalei Greeley diving touch managed to sail over the net into open court for a rare dig-kill, pushing UH back up to a 23-22 lead, but Katie Quinn's successful slide attack and Squyres' tool gave UC Davis its first set point at 24-23.
The Aggies' hope in preventing a sweep proved to be short-lived: Manu-Olevao pushed a shot through the block at 24-24, then pounded a line shot for another tool for a 25-24 match point. Finally, Magill and sophomore Nikki Taylor combined for a right-side stuff for the winner.
Hawai'i hit better than .300 in each of the three sets, finishing with a .378 effort in the finale. UC Davis improved its average in each frame, mostly by curbing the attack errors from 10 to six to four as the match progressed.
The Aggies return to action for the Central California coastal trip of Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara on October 3 and 4.
