BERKELEY, Calif. - Breanna Standifer won the women's discus with a career-best mark of 148 feet, 9 inches on Friday while the UC Davis men's and women's track and field teams' throwers picked up three second-place finishes during the Brutus Hamilton Open at Cal.

The meet was the first of two at Cal this weekend for the Aggies who will return to Berkeley on Saturday for the Brutus Hamilton Challenge.

Additionally on Friday, UC Davis had a strong showing in the women's steeplechase with Clara MacLeod and Rianna Goins each posting PR times to move up the Aggies' all-time list.

The Aggie men's team had seven top-five finishes at the meet, including a second-place showing on the track from Matt Moreno in the 400-meter dash (49.09 seconds) and a third-place performance from Brandon Pugh who in the 5,000 (14:26.13)

Standifer, a freshman from Lake Elsinore, won her event by nearly 17 feet over Keeley Eldridge of Utah State, who was second (132-0). Standifer's mark of 148-9 was a PR by almost six feet and debuts her on the program's all-time list at No. 8. Her previous best was 143-0 at the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge at Sacramento State earlier this month.

Teammate Veronica Smart added one of the throwers' other runner-up showings with her mark of 45-5 in the shot put. Standifer took fourth (41-1.5) in the event.

On the men's side, throwers Brandon Greenberg and Matthew Bender picked up second-place performances. Greenberg was a close second to unattached competitor Jeremy Hines (53-7.75) in the shot put after going 53-0.25. Bender was second in the discus at 162-4, just behind winner Lucas Rowley (165-5) of Stanford.

MacLeod and Goins, both freshman with the Aggies, brought highlights on the track with their steeplechase efforts. MacLeod took fifth in 10:54.03 for a nearly 10-second PR that pushed her up a spot to No. 7 all-time. Goins was seventh in 11:09.96, a nearly 7-second career-best for her that improved her No. 9 all-time standing.

Other strong performances from the women's team included a second-place finish from freshman Holly Tokar in the pole vault. Tokar cleared 11-11.75 to tie for first with two others but finished second due to misses. Johanna Borst added another second for UC Davis in the high jump (5-3). Karlaina Gipson also went over at 5-3, finishing in a tie for third on misses.

Pugh went 14:24.68 in the 5K at the Aggie Open in March to break into the Aggies' top 10 at No. 10. He nearly bettered that mark on Friday with his third-place time of 14:26.13. Grayson Hough (14:43.78) was eighth in the 49-competitor field.

Moreno's second-place time in the 400 of 49.09 was another career-best mark for UC Davis. Nicholas Ratto was third in the 800 (1:54.34), Hawk Hammer was fourth in the pole vault (14-4) and Jelani Legohn took fifth in the 400 hurdles (55.59).

Saturday's Brutus Hamilton Challenge will feature most of the Aggies' top members in invitational events against other four-year schools and open competitors.
