HONOLULU - Senior Holland Seymour hit 5-for-11 in her final collegiate match while sophomore Allie Wegener notched a team-leading nine kills, as UC Davis lost in straight sets to 25th-ranked Hawai'i by scores of 25-19, 25-16, 25-15 in Big West Conference women's volleyball action at the Stan Sheriff Center Saturday night.
The Aggies end their first season under head coach Dan Conners at 15-14 overall and 10-6 in conference play. The Rainbow Wahine improve to 21-6 for the year, 13-3 in Big West matches. Hawai'i ends up second in the conference standings behind undefeated Long Beach State, while UC Davis tied CSUN for third.
Seymour hit .455 with her 11 total attempts on offense, but the Aggies managed just .090 as a team with just 28 kills against 19 attacking errors. Sophomore setter Sophia Mar led the floor defense with 11 digs while Wegener and sophomore Kendall Frisoli each had nine. Redshirt freshman Aima Eichie contributed on four of UC Davis' 6.0 team blocks.
For Hawai'i, outside hitters Tai Manu-Olevao and Nikki Taylor each had nine kills while middles Olivia Magill and Kalei Adolpho had eight apiece. The Magill-Adolpho tandem hit a combined .519 for the match, helping the Wahine to a team average of .330. Senior libero Sarah Mendoza collected a match-high 16 digs on defense.
UH never trailed in any of the three matches. The Aggies stumbled to just nine kills and a .059 hitting average in the first set, including three attacking errors in a 9-4 initial hole. They rallied back to 12-11 thanks to a block assist and kill from senior middle blocker Katie Quinn. UC Davis pulled to within a single point on four more occasions, including a 17-16 margin on a Wegener kill, but the Rainbow Wahine ran away with eight of the final 11 points of the set. The Aggies stumbled to two service errors and two attack errors down that final stretch.
Hawai'i rode the momentum well into the second frame. Taylor knocked down three kills and Adolpho posted back-to-back blocks in a 10-3 start, and the `Bows never allowed their guests within fewer than six points for the remainder. UH powered its way to 20 kills and a .441 average in taking a 2-0 match lead. Taylor had five kills on seven swings in the second while Adolpho and Magill put down four each. Seymour was a bright spot for UC Davis in the middle frame, posting four kills on 10 attempts.
Hitting errors continued to plague the Aggies into the third, with five coming in the Bows' 11-5 start. Setter Erika Conners served up an ace during a brief comeback to 11-8, but two kills by Manu-Olevao and two aces from UH setter Tayler Higgins resulted in a 9-1 run, putting the Wahine up by 20-9. Junior outside hitter Ginger Long came off the bench for two of her three total kills in the final flourish, completing the match sweep for Hawai'i.
Oddly, the Aggie records of 15-14 and 10-6 represent mirror images of their 14-15 and 6-10 ledgers in 2013.
With two more blocks on Saturday, Quinn finished her career with 336 total, good for fourth in school history. Her 129 for the season also sits at No. 4 on the program's leaderboard, matching Kaersten Hill's 1998 effort. Junior Kaylin Squyres added four kills in the match, completing her outstanding season at 441. She misses the UC Davis top-five list for total kills but her 4.12 per set puts her fourth in school history. Finally, senior Victoria Lee official surpassed Betsy Sedlak for the school record for career hitting average: her .361 (465-92-1032) put her well ahead of her former teammate's previous benchmark of .336.
