CSUN sweeps UC Davis on Senior Night

Box Score Nov. 22, 2014

Final Stats

DAVIS, Calif. - Senior middle blocker Katie Quinn posted eight kills, a .400 average and five blocks to highlight the Aggie side of the boxscore, but CSUN came away with a 25-14, 25-19, 25-23 sweep to avenge a previous upset in Big West Conference women's volleyball action at the Pavilion Saturday night.

The Aggies slip to 15-13 overall and 10-5 in conference play. The Matadors, who had lost to UC Davis on their home floor in a televised match on October 24, improve to 18-8 for the year and 9-5 in Big West matches.

Quinn's hitting led a trio of UC Davis middle blockers with high efficiency rates but relatively low quantity in swings. Senior Victoria Lee and redshirt freshman Aima Eichie combined for 5-for-7 hitting. Lee was one of five senior players honored in prematch ceremonies, and was granted a ceremonial start, but only played that initial burst in which she tallied three kills.

Also recognized for their final home matches were Quinn, outside hitter Holland Seymour, opposite Valerie Brain and libero Megan Lancaster. Brain had a pair of kills and three blocks. Lancaster, who saw her career end with an ankle injury the previous weekend, lined up on the floor as an official starter but subbed out prior to the first serve.

Junior Kaylin Squyres posted 11 kills and 10 digs as the only Aggie in double figures for either category.

CSUN received 14 kills and 14 digs out of senior Casey Hinger. Sophomore Julie Haake, junior Cieana Stinson and senior Sam Kaul each had seven kills while combining for just five errors. Junior outside hitter Danetta Boykin added another nine kills to help the Matadors post a .311 overall average. Senior libero Kelcie Randazzo matched Hinger's digs total to pace the floor defense.

CSUN exploded both offensively and at the service line in the opening set, hitting 15 kills with just one error for a .583 attacking efficiency to go with four service aces. Hinger led the way with four kills, helping the Matadors escape an early 5-3 deficit to claim the 11-point win. The bright spot for UC Davis was Lee's perfect 3-for-3 before leaving the match. The Aggies hit a respectable .280 on 11 kills but converted only 11 of 24 side-out opportunities, which resulted in several lengthy Matador serving runs.

The Aggies struggled early to a .062 average to fall into a 12-6 hole in the second, but rallied back to within a 16-12 margin after back-to-back Squyres kills. Sophomore Kendall Walbrecht posted three blocks in the span of four points to bring the Aggies to within a 19-17 deficit, and Quinn's slam on a 1-set kept the margin at two, 20-18. However, CSUN responded with three straight, thanks to two miscues on the Aggie side and a key slide attack by Haake. Kaul wrapped up the second set with an offspeed kill in the middle of the tape followed by a solo stuff for the 25th point. The Matadors went into the break with a 2-0 match lead, hitting .403 overall to that point.

Quinn had three kills and three blocks to help UC Davis cool down the Matador offense to just .182, but the Aggies struggled to run their attack against the tough CSUN serve. They hit .130 and committed eight attack errors in the frame. Nonetheless, UC Davis hung tough late in the match as Quinn's blocking sparked a comeback from a 20-14 margin to a 21-20 deficit. Wegener put away a four set, Quinn scored on an off-balance roll shot and Brain tooled the Matador's right-side block, each time keeping the Aggies within one point of their guests. However, kills by Haake and Hinger kept UC Davis from equalizing, and CSUN finished off its sweep.

Quinn finished the week with seven blocks in the week's two matches, moving her past Kate DeVore (1999-2001) for fourth on the school's all-time career leaderboard. She has 334 total, 14 behind Candy Lench's No. 3 total of 348. Lee's brief appearance raised her career average back up to .361, putting her in position to break Betsy Sedlak's school record of .336.

The Aggies head to the Aloha State for their 2014 season finale on November 29.
