DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis enjoyed strong hitting performances from across the tape, hitting a season-best .362 overall to sweep Cal State Fullerton by scores of 25-21, 25-16, 25-9 in Big West Conference women's volleyball action at the Pavilion Thursday night.
The Aggies improve to 9-3 in league play and 14-11 overall. The Titans slip to 7-18 for the year and 1-11 in Big West matches.
Junior Kaylin Squyres led UC Davis offensively with 16 kills and just two errors for a .424 average. Additionally, the foursome of seniors Valerie Brain and Katie Quinn plus sophomore Kendall Walbrecht and Aima Eichie combined for another 22 kills and only one error for a .457 clip between them. Eichie also had five blocks to lead the Aggie net defense, with posted 10.0 as a team. Senior libero Megan Lancaster paced the floor defense with 13 digs while sophomore Allie Wegener added another 11.
Finally, the UC Davis passing game allowed only one service ace while helping setters Erika Conners and Sophia Mar post 18 assists each in the team's 6-2 system.
Cal State Fullerton managed just a .062 average, with only six kills in the second set. However, sophomore libero Paige Reed and sophomore defensive specialist McKenna Painton made for some tough points, picking up 13 and 11 digs, respectively.
The Titans led for the first half of the first set, amassing as much as a 13-9 lead on early offense from Niki Withers and setter dumps from junior McKenzie Olsen. Facing a 14-12 deficit, UC Davis scored four straight to take the lead. Fullerton had a swing-and-miss attacking error for the go-ahead point, then a net violation made it 16-14 in the Aggies' favor. Wegener came up with a diving save to cover a block and allow Squyres to score a kill to keep it at 17-15. UC Davis held at least a two-point lead the rest of the way in a set with no Aggie attack errors. Mar's spectacular pancake dig near the 10-foot line resulted in a Squyres kill for the win.
The Aggies continued their momentum into the second set, largely on the strength of their serving, exploding from a 5-5 early tie to a nine-point win. By hitting their passing targets, they held Cal State Fullerton to minus-.032 hitting. Squyres had eight kills and an ace in a set during which the Aggies never trailed.
The third set proved even more dominating than the second from a UC Davis point of view. Quinn and Squyres each tallied four kills in a frame that featured Aggie runs of 10-2 and 9-1. In the latter, Wegener's serving resulted in two aces and three free-ball passes. Quinn's tool in the middle was the last of that stretch, setting the board at 22-7. Eichie and Brain each chipped in a pair of blocks while the Titans struggled to just six kills for the second straight set.
This is the second consecutive match and fourth overall that the Aggies have held opponents to under .100 attacking, largely on the strength of the serving and blocking game. They kept UC Riverside to .051 while totaling 16.0 blocks last weekend. Previously, UC Davis stifled Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara to .076 and .020 hitting early in the conference season.
The Aggies return to action for a Saturday afternoon matchup against UC Irvine. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
