Box Score Oct. 3, 2014 Final Stats SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - UC Davis enjoyed a combined .429 hitting out of its middle blockers and right-side hitters in claiming a four-set, 25-20, 23-25, 25-15, 25-20 win over Cal Poly in Big West Conference women's volleyball action at Mott Athletics Center Friday night.
The Aggies pick up their first conference victory, improving to 6-9 overall and 1-1 in Big West play. The Mustangs slip to 5-7 for the year and drop to 0-2 in league.
Senior Valerie Brain, sophomore Kendall Walbrecht and redshirt freshman Aima Eichie each tallied eight kills and committed only four attacking errors between them. Senior middle blocker Katie Quinn added 4-for-9 hitting while leading all players with 10 total blocks. Senior Megan Lancaster picked up 14 digs and served up two of UC Davis' eight total aces.
Overall, the Aggies had 17.0 team blocks. Besides Quinn's match-high number, Brain contributed on seven, Eichie on five, with Walbrecht and sophomore outside hitter Allie Wegener figuring on four apiece. Wegener and junior Kaylin Squyres each tallied team-leading 11 kills.
For Cal Poly, freshman middle blocker Caihla Petriprin mustered up nine kills and a .471 hitting average, but two of their leading hitters finished in the red with 19 combined attack errors. As a team, the Mustangs totaled 31 hitting errors, including the 17 to the Aggie block.
UC Davis struggled early in the match, committing three straight errors to spot its host an 8-5 lead in the first. Petripin scored back-to-back kills to later forge a 14-11 edge for Cal Poly before the Aggies found their groove: consecutive Valerie Brain blocks ignited a 9-3 run that included two kills each from Squyres and Walbrecht. That set UC Davis out in front, 22-18, never to look back on its way to a 1-0 match lead.
The Mustangs flipped the script in their second-set victory, overcoming deficits of 11-8, 16-14 and 18-16. Taylor Gruenewald posted three kills in a run of five unanswered to give Cal Poly a 21-18 edge. UC Davis managed to close the gap to within one point on three separate occasions but could not equalize. Middle blocker Savannah Niemen finished the frame with a side-out kill, sending both teams to the break in a 1-1 tie.
The Aggies took over the match after the 10-minute intermission, hitting .257 while holding the Mustangs to minus-.027 in the third set; then exploding to a .444 average in the fourth. Squyres totaled five kills on nine attempts in the third set, with Katie Quinn adding three block assists, allowing UC Davis to ride its 8-2 start to a wire-to-wire win.
Cal Poly managed to hang in during the fourth set despite the Aggies' high attack efficiency. Sophomore Anna Gorman's ace pushed the Mustangs to a 13-12 lead, but that proved to be the last high note for the green and gold. Quinn and Brain teamed up for a block, Brain scored a kill, then junior middle Jillian Johnson served up an ace to put UC Davis back up by a 15-13 margin. Cal Poly tied the set at 17-all but could not regain the lead. Quinn had a block and two kills down the final stretch, lifting the Aggies to the five-point triumph.
UC Davis' .216 overall hitting is the highest since the .259 totaled in a sweep of Portland back on September 7. The 17 blocks marks the seventh time the Aggies have totaled double digits in net defense.
UC Davis returns to action at UC Santa Barbara for a 5 p.m. Big West Conference matchup Saturday.
