Box Score Oct. 11, 2014 Final Stats DAVIS, Calif. - Sophomore Kendall Walbrecht hit 10-for-16 with no attacking errors while sophomore Allie Wegener added a team-high 11 kills on 30 swings for a .333 clip, leading UC Davis to a 25-14, 25-17, 25-20 sweep of UC Riverside in Big West Conference women's volleyball action at the Pavilion Saturday.
The Aggies win their third straight match and second consecutive 3-0 sweep, improving to 8-9 overall and 3-1 in Big West play. The Highlanders slip to 2-14 for the year and remain winless in conference at 0-4.
Walbrecht's kills total marks a personal best for a three-set match, and her highest total since posted 11 in a five-set match against Northern Colorado back on September 20. She also added four block assists in the match, all teaming up with redshirt freshman Aima Eichie, who led all players with seven stuffs. Seniors Valerie Brain and Katie Quinn had totals of six and five, respectively, bringing the Aggie team total to 12.
For UC Riverside, junior outside hitter Ashley Cox tallied 12 kills, including seven in the third set. She had six in the first 12 points of that finale, helping the Highlanders hold steady with a 12-12 tie, before the Aggies stormed ahead to finish their sweep.
Each set featured a similar basic arc in which the Highlanders rallied to a close battle early on, even taking a brief lead, before the Aggies stormed to strong runs down the final stretch. UCR led 10-8 in the first before UC Davis ran to the 11-point win. The guests held a 5-3 edge in the second before a 7-0 run catapulted the Aggies to the set victory. Then Cox' offense kept her team in the hunt until tough UC Davis serving quieted the UCR attack en route to the 25-20 win.
Wegener hit 6-for-16 in the opening set but some unlikely attacking errors by her veteran teammates kept the Highlanders afloat in the early stages. The tide shifted after UCR crafted a 10-8 lead. Conners had two aces and Wegener scored a pair of kills in a 5-0 run to flip UC Davis to a 13-10 advantage. Sophia Mar, Conners' setting counterpart in the Aggies' 6-2 system, later served three straight points to make it 21-13, just about the time Walbrecht found her hitting stroke for good. The 6-foot-3 sophomore scored that 21st point, delivered a left-side line shot for the 22nd, then came around to slam a back set for the 24th.
Mar's serving provided a timely push in the second set as well. Facing a 5-3 deficit to start, the Aggies supported her with seven unanswered to take a 10-5 lead. Walbrecht figured on five consecutive, teaming with Eichie for three blocks then knocking down back-to-back kills. Conners served two more aces to extend the Aggie margin from 12-8 to 17-8. UC Davis maintained at least an eight-point edge the rest of the way, despite the thawing attack of Riverside's Cox.
The Aggies saw their 8-4 start dwindle to 9-8 when Cristina Maietta scored two kills in a 4-1 UCR run. Cox put down three kills in another 4-1 Highlander match to tie the set at 12-12. However, UC Davis never fell behind. Brain and Squyres hammered out kills while junior middle Jillian Johnson served up an ace to push the Aggies back up by 15-12. Squyres did her job at the service line later in the third, coaxing three Riverside attack errors amidst a 5-0 stretch that set the board to 22-16. UCR rallied to close the gap to 22-19 until two more Walbrecht kills restored the momentum and set up a 24-20 match point. With Conners serving, the Highlanders got the quality pass that had eluded them throughout the match, and backup setter Halli Hoeft sent a set to Cox along the left side. However, Brain and Quinn came up with the big block, with little chance for UCR to cover.
The 82-minute match time marks the fastest Aggie win since disposing of UCR in 1:21 almost a year ago. UC Davis hit .314 for the match, amassing 41 kills with just eight attack errors, in compiling its best attack average since the .377 in last season's Halloween night win over the Highlanders.
Finally, the 12 total blocks continues a trend in net defense for UC Davis, which has averaged a Big West-leading 3.35 per set during conference play.
The Aggies begin a four-match road swing at Cal State Fullerton on Friday. Their next home match is October 31 against UC Santa Barbara.
