BERKELEY, Calif. - Samantha Kearney led a 1-2 Aggie finish in the women's 1,500-meter run, Chidinma Onyewuenyi won the hammer, and senior Calvin Thigpen had a strong sixth-place showing in the men's 5,000, all of them helping highlight UC Davis' efforts on Friday during the Brutus Hamilton Open at Cal.

Additionally, Kandyce Doxey had career-best times in both the 100 and 200, both marks impacting the program's career leaders list.

The meet was the first of two days of competition for UC Davis at Cal. Friday's open meet precedes Saturday's invitational sections with the Aggies prominent throughout the event lineups on both days.

Kearney and teammate Caitlin Fitzgerald posted the two fastest times in the 1,500, crossing in 4 minutes, 34.03 seconds and 4:34.50, respectively, during the event's fast heat. It was Kearney's first 1,500 race of the year while Fitzgerald's time was a season-best by more than four seconds.

Onyewuenyi provided UC Davis' lone win of the meet, taking the hammer with a mark of 192 feet, 6 inches. It was her third-longest effort of the season, her fourth time over 190 feet and marked her fourth win of the season. She's finished second the other three times.

Running in the fast section of the 5,000, Thigpen was timed in 14:27.51, nearly 11 seconds faster than the 14:38.31 he clocked at Sacramento State's Mondo Mid-Major two weeks ago. It was also barely two seconds off the Aggies' top 10 list.

Doxey enjoyed a strong day in the sprints for UC Davis, finishing fifth in the 100 in 12.27 seconds and then grabbing eighth in the 200 in 25.07. Her time in the short sprint tied her with Phonecia Holly (2000) for No. 10 all-time at UC Davis while her 200 was an improvement by .02 and broke an eighth-place tie on that chart.

The Aggie women had eight other top-10 finishes on Friday including a strong showing in the 5,000 where Kristine Lozoya (17:16.91) and Shannon Harcus (17:18.63) were fourth and sixth, respectively, in significant season-best times.

Suzanne Howard was fourth in the 400 hurdles (1:02.94) - within a half-second of making the program's top-10 ledger - while Emily Bush was fifth in the pole vault.

The UC Davis men finished with 10 top-10 placings on Friday, picking up top-five showings from Maurice Spikes, Jr., who was third in the high jump (6-3.50), Russ Pfaff who took fourth in the steeplechase (9:15.10), a fourth from Justin Kirkland in the shot put (48-1.25) and a fifth from Robert Neely in the 110 high hurdles (15.40).

Besides Thigpen's finish in the 5,000, the Aggies also had sixth-places from Hosea Tate in the 400 (51.40), Sava Boyadjiev in the long jump (20-2.25) and Kirkland in the javelin (165-9).

Competition during Saturday's invitational portion of the meet begins at 10 a.m. in the field events and 1:30 p.m. on the track.
