SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Anikia Jackson had a career-best mark in the javelin, Kiara Reed moved into the Aggies' top 10 in the 800-meter run, and Jonathan Sees posted the team's fastest time this season in the 1,500, helping highlight the UC Davis men's and women's track and field teams' showings on Saturday at the Johnny Mathis Invitational at San Francisco State.
The unscored meet brought together university, junior college, unattached and club competitors. The Aggies, coming off a big weekend last week at the Cal-Nevada Championships and Stanford Invitational, and heading next week to a high-powered meet at Arizona State, brought a mixture of veterans and newcomers to Saturday's competition.
Jackson helped highlight the women's showing, winning the javelin with a personal-best mark of 141 feet. That bettered her previous-best by two feet and improved her No. 5 position on the Aggies' all-time charts.
Reed moved into the top 10 in the 800, winning the event with a time of 2:11.85 which places her 10th. She won her race on Saturday by nearly three seconds. Ofunne Okwudiafor also had a top-10 performance in the triple jump, going 38-7.75 which would place her eighth. However, wind readings were not available, negating the mark for record purposes but still providing a solid showing.
Other strong marks came from Kristin Arkin in the 1,500 who had the day's fastest time (4:35.82) which was also a season-best. Lauren Radke and Tessa Fraser also tied season-bests in the pole vault, going 12-1.50 for the second straight week.
The Aggie women also won the 4x400 relay.
For the Aggie men, Michael Starr also had a solid day in the pole vault, winning the event with a PR of 15-1. Jonathon Sees did the same in the 1,500, finishing first in 3:50.91, just outside the Aggies' all-time top 10 and the fastest on the team this year.
Other event winners for the Aggie men included Fed Martinez in the steeple (10:09.78); Jake Fuller in the discus (150-10) and Nolan Frazier in the 400 hurdles (54.03). UC Davis men finished in the top three in 18 heats or events, overall.
UC Davis will continue its season at Arizona State next weekend when it competes in the Sun Angel Track Classic.
