Big West Multi-Event Championships Results
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Jamie Feaster became the second UC Davis pole vaulter to earn a bid to the NCAA Division I Regional Championships while standout hurdler Sirena Williams lowered her school record in the 100-meter hurdles, highlighting the Aggies' action on Saturday at the Sacramento State Track and Field Open.
The meet served as the final tuneup prior to next weekend's Big West Conference Championships.
While the bulk of the league meet runs next weekend at UC Irvine, the conference conducted its multi-event competition this weekend and the Aggies' were well-represented. UC Davis junior Anikia Jackson gave UC Davis five points with her fourth-place heptathlon finish, scoring 4,821 points. Aggie freshman Johanne Boulat finished 10th with a season-high 4,213 points.
Will Guthrie took sixth in the decathlon for the UC Davis men, scoring 6,138 points to provide three team points for next week's meet while freshman Robert Neely added another team point after his 6,030 points helped him finish eighth in the event. Both marks are season-bests.
In Sacramento, Feaster joined teammate Ethan Ostrom in qualifying for the regional meet in the pole vault after finishing second at Saturday's meet with a third-place mark of 16 feet, 6.75 meters, right at the qualifying standard. He also tied Ostrom and two others for the No. 4 all-time position at UC Davis while becoming the Aggie men's ninth regional qualifier overall.
Williams, the Big West Conference Women's Track Athlete of the Week two weeks ago after lowering her school record in the hurdles mark to 13.79 seconds, took it down even further by taking a close second on Saturday in 13.76. Williams has lowered the school mark three times in the past four weeks.
The UC Davis teams combined to win four events on Saturday, including three by the men. Thomas Phillips and Alex Wilright had another close race, this time in the 400 hurdles with Phillips crossing first in 51.29 and WIlright right behind in 51.69.
Matt Council captured the open 400 in 48.63, leading a 1-2 Aggie finish with Andre Gaston, while Igor Seriba won the triple jump (47-08.50), just ahead of teammate Tolu Wusu (47-06.25) who was second.
The men's all-time list also saw changes in a pair of field events. Ed Orgon moved up one spot to No. 9 in the shot put, taking third at 52-06.50 while Brock Bennet moved into a tie for 10th in the javelin at 192-05 after also finishing third.
Ugo Eke captured the women's lone event win at Sacramento State, finishing first in the 400 in 55.40 and marking her third sub-56.00 race of the year. Azaria Lewis became the third Aggie to debut on the pole vault's career list this season, finishing with an effort of 10-11.75 to move into a tie for 10th.
Stephanie Eckels took second in the long jump at 18-06.50, which would've been good enough for No. 10 all-time at UC Davis but had a wind of +2.4 mps, negating it for record purposes. Her mark, though, is a season-best for UC Davis.
"It was hot but we responded well and it sets us up (for next week)," said women's coach Deanne Vochatzer.
Jackson sparked her second-day performance at the multi-event championships by winning the javelin by more than 15 feet with a mark of 132-11 that tallied her 677 points. Boulat ended her day in strong fashion, scoring 799 points after finishing second in the 800 at 2:21.79.
Guthrie and Neely both picked up season-best scores in their decathlon competition. Guthrie finished third in the javelin for his highest placing of the day, scoring 594 points with a mark of 165-03. Neely started his day strong, placing fifth in the 110 high hurdles in 15.58 for 781 points.
"We're on the boards at the Big West Championships and are looking bringing our (whole) team down here and putting those points to work," said men's coach Jon Vochatzer.
James Nunno of Cal Poly scored 7,208 points to win the decathlon while Sherrina Lofton of Cal State Northridge tallied 5,224 points to capture the heptathlon.
