Men In 6th, Women in 8th At Big West Championships

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -- Jah Bennett tied for second in the high jump for the top finish for the UC Davis men on Friday while Kaitlin Gregg was third in the 10,000 for the women as both teams opened competition at the Big West Conference Track and Field Championships at Cal State Northridge.

Just seven men's and seven women's events have been scored so far. The Aggie men have 21 points and are in sixth place while the women tallied 13 points in early scoring and are in eighth place. The host Matadors hold leads in both the men's and women's competitions.

Most track events held preliminary races on Friday with a full slate of finals scheduled for Saturday afternoon. Sirena Williams went a wind-aided 13.93 seconds for the third-fastest time in the 100-meter hurdles, leading three UC Davis hurdlers into Saturday's final. She will be joined by Chelsea Azevedo (14.36) and Gretchen Haussler (14.62).

The Aggies' 110-meter hurdlers also enjoyed good preliminary races with Jazz Trice moving to No. 3 all-time at UC Davis with his mark of 14.03. He had the second-fastest time while winning his heat on Friday. Teammate Polly Gnepa - who set a school-record of 14.01 in the event last weekend - also advanced to the final with his time of 14.14. He also finished first in his prelim.

Bennett earned his tied for runner-up honors with a mark of 6 feet, 8.75 inches while Gregg posted a time of 36:42.00 in the grueling 10,000. Bennett tallied seven points toward the men's team total while Gregg picked up six for the women.

Other Aggies to score for UC Davis on Friday included K.C. Cody and Thomas Dileo in the 10,000 who finished fifth and sixth, respectively, to total seven points. Calvin Thigpen placed sixth in the steeplechase for three more points while Ross Tate had three points with his sixth-place performance in the high jump. Lance Walkington placed eighth in the javelin for another point.

Kirsten Phillips had a career-best mark of 157 feet, 3 inches in the hammer throw, jumping to No. 7 at UC Davis and delivering the UC Davis women two points. Brittany Bickel was sixth in the javelin while Tessa Fraser placed seventh in the pole vault, picking up five points between them.

UC Davis men had five athletes advance to finals in track events while the women nine. Among those moving into finals for the women was Jenna Gailey, whose time of 2:12.11 gave her the No. 10 spot on the career list.
