STANFORD, Calif. - Freshman Rikki Foster led off the 12th inning with a double for his first career hit and senior Matt Dempsey drove him home three at bats later to give UC Davis a 9-8 upset victory over No. 10 Stanford at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond in front of 1,420 fans Wednesday night.
The win improves the Aggies' overall record to 21-10 while the Cardinal fall to 15-10-1. It is the second straight game the two teams have played into extra innings. Last year's contest went 13 innings. In addition, it is the Aggies third victory in their last four games against Stanford.
"We always play well against Stanford and to come in here and get a win is a good accomplishment for us," said Aggie coach Rex Peters. "Now we'll just focus on this upcoming weekend."
In the four hour and 14 minute game, the two teams combined to throw 17 different pitchers. Jeff Reekers got the win for UC Davis. It is the longest game of the season for UC Davis and marks the second win over a ranked opponent this season. They split a four-game series with No. 17 Fresno State in the opening week of season.
Ryan Scoma had two RBI's to lead UC Davis while Jake Jefferies went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Ty Kelly also doubled and drove in a run for the Aggies. Evan Hudson had two RBI's on a sacrifice fly and a walk.
Cord Phelps led the Cardinal with two hits and a two RBI. The Cardinal threw eight pitchers in the game. Corey Schwartz got his first loss of the season.
Bryan Evans started the game and threw four shutout innings. He allowed only two hits and struck out a game-high five batters, three of which came looking, in the no decision.
UC Davis scored two runs in the first inning to take an early lead. Kelly walked with one out and Jefferies doubled to advance him to third. Hudson got a sacrifice fly to right field to score Kelly and Jefferies came home on a throwing error by the right fielder.
Stanford took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning with three runs. The Cardinal started the inning with three straight singles up the middle to score the first run. After a walk, Phelps hit another single up the middle to score two more runs and give Stanford its first lead of the game.
Kelly tied the scored with an RBI double in the sixth inning. Cardinal reliever Michael Marshall had retired 11 consecutive batters before hitting Ryan Royster to start the sixth inning. Royster stole second and was driven home off Kelly's double.
Stanford loaded the bases in the seventh inning and capitalized on two errors to score four unearned runs and reclaim the lead at 7-3. Following a infield fly, the Cardinal took the lead as pinch hitter Brent Milleville was hit by a pitch. Jake Schlander scored another run on a wild pitch, and Brendan Damaracki and Phelps scored an error on the shortstop.
UC Davis cut into the lead in the eighth with three runs to pull within one at 7-6. Scott Heylman led off the inning with a single and Kelly walked to put to on for Jefferies who brought home the first run off a single. Scoma drove home Jefferies and Kelly with a single to left field.
Stanford brought another run home in the eighth inning off a double down the left field line from Domaracki to take a two-run lead.
The Aggies got their first two batters on base in the ninth inning off a walk and a hit by pitch. Kelly advanced the runners and Jefferies was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out. Hudson walked to bring in the first run and James was hit by a pitch to plate the tying run.
The Aggies face UC Santa Barbara on the road this weekend in their second conference series of the year.
