THE SHORT STORY: CBU scored four runs in the top of the first and added two more in the fifth on the way to a 6-3 win over UC Davis in the series opener Wednesday night at Dobbins Stadium.
Ethan Felix's three-run home run to right field in the bottom of the fourth pulled the Aggies within one before the Lancers tacked on. Ryne Palmer (5-3) earned the win after five innings, Zachary Yates recorded his seventh save with a scoreless 1.1 innings, and
Grayson Bonanno (0-3) took the loss after four innings in the start.
LEADING OFF
- Felix went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run, three RBIs and a run scored, his sixth long ball of the season
- Elijah McNeal added a 2-for-4 night with a double and a run scored on Felix's homer
- Mason Lerma worked 4.0 scoreless innings in relief, allowing three hits and two walks with one strikeout on 60 pitches
- Taylor Werth added a scoreless inning of one-hit relief with a strikeout on 12 pitches
- Kai Mault had some of the hardest hit balls from the Aggie lineup on the night, finishing 1-for-4 while scoring on Felix's home run
- Joey Wright added a 1-for-3 night with a walk
HOW IT HAPPENED
- CBU jumped out in the top of the first as Connor Ross doubled down the left field line to score Chris Ramirez, Cole Hansen followed with an RBI single to right center to plate Ross, and Eric Ruiz capped the frame with a two-run home run to left field that scored Hansen for a 4-0 Lancer lead.
- UC Davis answered in the bottom of the fourth when Mault singled and McNeal reached on a fielder's choice, before Felix homered to right field for a three-run shot that cut the deficit to 4-3.
- CBU added two in the top of the fifth on Ross's RBI single to right that scored Diesel Toth, with Ramirez also coming around to score from third on a fielding error, pushing the lead to 6-3.
- Werth and Lerma combined for five scoreless innings of relief over the final five frames to keep UC Davis in the game.
- UC Davis had opportunities late, but ultimately went down in order against Yates in the ninth as the Lancer closer recorded two strikeouts to lock up his seventh save of the season.
