The short story: Double-digit kills from Jade Light and Brooke Hibino led the offense for UC Davis volleyball as the team fell in three sets to Wisconsin on Thursday, Sept. 4.

FIRST SERVE
  • Jade Light led the way for the Aggies with 15 kills and seven digs.
  • Brooke Hibino also landed in double-digits with 12 kills, her first double-digit performance of her career.
  • Mia Starr orchestrated the offense with 28 assists.
  • Davis was strong at the net all night with five total blocks from Allie Caldwell and four from Breeze Czapinski, putting up a total of 14 blocks.
  • The defense also led to 14 attack errors from the Badgers.

WHAT HEAD COACH DAN CONNERS HAD TO SAY

"We had opportunities to win the first and the second set, we have to learn how to close in those moments. I thought Brooke came in and played great in her first career start. Team played with great energy through the first set in half of the second, it's really important For us to figure out how to close out matches."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the first, the offense of Light, Hibino, and Ally Chandler kept the Aggies within striking distance, keeping the set tied at 11 apiece.
  • Through the second half of the frame, the team kept pace by capitalizing on errors from the Badgers and a service ace from Haden Bones to stay tied, 22-22.
  • The Aggies fought through long rallies in the final three points of the set, but Wisconsin would ultimately win 25-23 to take a 1-0 lead.
  • After a 3-0 run from the Badgers opened the second set, Davis would strike back with kills from Czapinski and Hibino to take an 8-6 lead.
  • Wisconsin responded with two quick kills, but the Aggies would get hot, with a block from Caldwell and Light capping off an 8-0 run and giving the road team a 16-8 lead.
  • The Badgers refused to back down, scoring six of the next seven along with a separate 5-0 run to retake the lead, 20-19.
  • A few points later, with the home team up 24-22, Davis used an error and a Czapinski kill to tie it up again at 24 and send the set into extra points.
  • But two quick kills from the Badgers would wrap up set two 26-24 and give them a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • After seeing Wisconsin open set three on a 9-2 lead, the Aggies would get their first kills of the frame from Hibino and Light.
  • Throughout the set, the team would continue using the offense of Hibino, getting as close as eight, 11-19.
  • However, it wouldn't be enough as the Badgers would claim the third 25-15 and win the match 3-0.
