DAVIS, Calif. — A special clash on Halloween ended in treats for UC Davis volleyball, securing a sweep against top seeded Hawai'i on Saturday, Oct. 31.
FIRST SERVE
- The loss for Hawai'i was only their fourth of the season, snapping an 11-game winning streak.
- It's also only the second time this year the Rainbow Wahine have been swept.
- Ally Chandler once again led the offense with 14 kills, also collecting two blocks.
- After being held to zero aces last time out, the service for the Aggies showed out once again with six aces.
- Mia Starr set up the offense all night long with 35 assists.
- Defensively, Ximena Cordero Barr protected the backcourt with 16 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Facing a 2-7 deficit to begin set one, Davis used service by Khloe Wong to even it up early at seven apiece.
- After battling point for point to the 12's, a Rainbow Wahine error sparked the offense again, with back-to-back aces by Isabella Umpierre making it 17-12 Davis.
- A pair of points for Hawai'i did nothing to slow down the run, with the Aggies getting six of the last seven with Brooke Hibino and Demi Cole getting the last two on a 25-15 win.
- Set two was much tighter, as both clubs exchanged points all the way to the green zone.
- Three quick points gave Hawai'i a slight edge at 20-17, but a 4-0 run by Davis put them right back up.
- Tied at 23 apiece, a red card to Hawai'i's head coach made it set point for the home team before a Wahine kill led to extras in the frame.
- The set didn't go far however, as a duo block from Starr and Cole was followed by a Hawai'i error, securing the win 27-25 and giving the Aggies a 2-0 lead.
- Small runs on both sides told the story of set three, as it was late drama once again with the clubs tied at 19.
- With Cordero Barr at the service line, Davis started a 5-0 run featuring a kill from Chandler and a block by Chandler and Umpierre.
- One more kill went Hawai'i's way, but Chandler's 14th kill became all she wrote, giving the home team a 25-20 victory and their fifth sweep of the season.
UP NEXT: The Aggies begin a two week road trip starting on Friday, Nov. 6 when they take on UTEP in El Paso. First serve will be at 5:00 pm PT and all of the action is streamed on MW+.
