Sussex Secures First Career Double-Double In Win Over Wildcats

DAVIS, Calif. — 10 points and 12 rebounds from Avery Sussex gave the sophomore her first career double-double in a UC Davis women's basketball 74-42 win over Chico State on Sunday, Dec. 14.

Score: UC Davis 74, Chico State 42
Location: Davis, Calif. (University Credit Union Center)
Records: UC Davis 8-3, Chico State 6-3

OPENING TIP
  • All 12 of Sussex's rebounds came on the defensive end, as she helped lead her team to 55 total rebounds on the day.
  • Megan Norris also had a double-double with 10 points and a team-high 13 rebounds. This is the center's sixth double-double of the season.
  • This is the first time two players have gone for a double-double this season. The last pair of Aggies to do so was Tova Sabel and Sydney Burns against Long Beach State on February 6.
  • Tegan Young went for double-digits for the second time this year, leading the team with 13 points.
  • Rounding out the Aggie double-digit scorers was Ryann Bennett, who went for 12 on the day.
  • Davis got heavy contributions from the second unit today, with five bench players playing 10 or more minutes.
  • The Aggie defense was especially strong in quarters two and three, giving up only five points in the second period and six in the third period.
WHAT HEAD COACH JENNIFER GROSS HAD TO SAY

"We knew that this was going to be a battle. We weren't expecting to come out and roll over this team. They came with it in the first quarter; they made a ton of shots. I thought we could've been better in terms of our overall urgency, and we seemed fatigued early on. We picked it up in the second quarter and got on a bit of a run, which got a little more energy going, and we were able to maintain that in the second half."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The offense got started with a pair of threes from Young, along with treys from Norris and Bennett, to keep up with the early 13-12 lead from Chico State.
  • Nya Epps joined in on the fun with a layup to give her team a late lead, but the Wildcats ended the period with a three to take an 18-16 advantage into the second.
  • After another Chico three gave the road team a lead two minutes into the quarter, the Davis offense came to life with Sussex scoring seven of the first ten for her team.
  • A second layup from Epps pushed the Aggies up by ten. Contributions from Norris, Young, and Emmy Ersdala helped their team to continue building their lead, going into halftime up 37-23.
  • Entering the second half, the threes continued to fall with Young and Bennett cashing in from beyond the arc to push the lead to 20 halfway through the third.
  • On back-to-back possessions, Victoria Baker powered her team with two straight layups, broken up by a steal on the defensive end.
  • Entering the game, Sophie Lentfer scored the last four for the Aggies in the period, who went into the final ten minutes up 60-29.
  • Sussex and Ersdala went back-to-back on triples to open the fourth quarter.
  • With the Wildcats scoring a pair of late threes, Baker responded with her first trey of the night.
  • A layup from Carrington Davis put the finishing touches on a 74-42 victory for the Aggies.
