The short story:  UC Davis volleyball out blocked RV Washington nearly handing the Huskies their first loss of the season, but the Aggies would ultimately fall in four sets, wrapping up their weekend in Seattle.

FIRST SERVE
  • The Aggies finished with nine blocks, while Washington only recorded five
  • As a defensive unit, UC Davis held Washington to .190 hitting
  • Senior Olivia Utterback finished with a team-high 13 kills, adding 10 digs and 13.5 points
  • Sophomore Ally Chandler led the Ags with five total blocks, and she added seven kills on .333 hitting
  • Sophomore Mia Starr set 36 Aggie kills, adding three kills of her own to go along with 13 digs
  • Senior Julia Ng ended the match with 21 digs, adding four assists and two service aces
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UC Davis showed it was here to play in the opening set, answering an early four-point Washington run with a three-point stretch to make it an early competitive 5-5
  • The Aggies used a pair of back-to-back points during the middle of the set to far enough away from Washington to eventually take the set
  • At 18-14, Starr held serve for three points, smoking an ace for the Ags who also got kills from Chandler and junior Jade Light putting UC Davis up 22-14
  • Despite a four-point response by Washington, UC Davis locked things up on a pair of blocks by Light and Caldwell to give the Aggies their 25-19 opening set victory
  • Late in the second set, when Washington looked to pull away, the Aggies stuck with the BIG10 opponent, getting withing 21-22 down the stretch of the set
  • But three-straight points by Washington wrapped up the 25-21 second set win, tying the match at 1-1
  • In the third set, both sides traded several three-points or more service holds making for a back-and-forth set as momentum bounced back and forth with each rally
  • At 16-17, Washington went on a pair of three-point runs, creating a big enough gap that led to a 25-19 third set win
  • Washington took an early lead in the fourth set and looked to pull away easily, but the Aggies did not go away quietly
  • Fighting all the way back, UC Davis tied the score up at 22-22 on the tail end of a four-point Aggie run
  • Unfortunately for the Aggies, the next three points would fall Washington's way, leading to their 25-22 fourth set win and a 3-1 match win
UP NEXT: The Aggies return to the University Credit Union Center on Thurs., Sept. 19 when they host RV UCLA at 6 p.m. UC Davis then gets Big West play started on Sept. 26 with Long Beach State and on Sept. 28 when UC San Diego comes to Davis.
