The short story: For the first time in program history, UC Davis volleyball knocked off UCLA out digging and going block-for-block with the Big Ten program for an exciting team-earned four-set win to wrap up non-conference play.

FIRST SERVE
  • Junior Jade Light finished with a double-double, smashing home 11 kills, adding 10 digs and two blocks
  • Sophomore Mia Starr ran the offense, recording 32 assists and adding four kills
  • Senior Olivia Utterback did a little bit of everything, finishing with nine kills, two service aces, three blocks and eight digs
  • Senior Julia Ng found herself all over the floor, finishing with 10 digs, three service aces and four assists
  • UC Davis tied UCLA in blocks with seven apiece
  • The Aggies out dug UCLA, 42-to-39
  • The Bruins committed 21 service errors on the match and had two ball handling errors called on them
WHAT HEAD COACH DAN CONNERS HAD TO SAY
"The win felt great. All the credit to our team going for it and for how they played. They trusted each other and the connection they had with each other. We played loose and free and that's how we wanted to do it. We showed a lot of resilience there to bounce back in that third set. We could have let us get that done, and it's a game of runs and momentum and we were able to outlast their second set run."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Aggies came out of the gate ready to go, with neither side gaining more than a four-point lead throughout the entire set, UC Davis showed from the start they were here to play
  • Facing set point at 23-24, Light was there on a set by Starr to get the kill and tie it up at 24-24
  • Back-to-back attack errors, on service by junior Haden Bones locked up the first set win for Davis, with the Aggies coming away with a 26-24 victory to open the action
  • UCLA came out in the second set on fire and built a lead the Aggies could never overcome, locking up a 25-15 victory to tie the match at 1-1
  • Late in the third set, things were tied as late as 20-20, but over the final six points decided the Aggies would come away with five
  • With Ng on serve and the score at 23-21, back-to-back kills by Starr put the Aggies back in the driver seat with a 25-21 third set victory
  • In the fourth set, the Aggies put the pressure on UCLA and never let up, taking the lead for good early in the set on a four-point run spurred on by kills from Light and sophomore Ally Chandler that put Davis up 7-5 early
  • The Ags held court for the remainder of the set, fighting off countless UCLA charges, including a pair of points late to fight off the Aggie match point
  • But a kill by sophomore Ally Caldwell on another great set by Starr put away the Bruins and locked up the historic four set win for the Aggies, with a 25-22 match winning fourth set victory
UP NEXT: The Aggies remain at the University Credit Union Center with a Big West Conference opening weekend against Long Beach State on Sept. 26 and UC San Diego on Sept. 28.
