Aggies Enter Final Week of Regular Season

DAVIS, Calif. – UC Davis enters the final week of the regular season with conference tournament seeding still up for grabs.

Standing at 11-7 in conference, the Aggies are in a tie for fourth place in the Big West standings, all knotted up with UC Riverside. UC Davis can finish as high as third which would grant the Aggies a first-round bye in the postseason tournament. Davis' team will look to defend home court against UC San Diego and Long Beach State in the penultimate week of regular season basketball.

Prior to Saturday's contest, three Aggie seniors – Campbell Gray, Lena Svanholm, and Evanne Turner – will be honored for their hard work and dedication to the UC Davis women's basketball program.

LAST WEEK
In a closely contested encounter at the home of the Big West Conference leaders, UC Davis was edged out by Hawai'i in a gripping overtime finish, 63-57.
The Aggies (15-13, 11-7 Big West) received a commendable performance from Tova Sabel, who led the scoring with 17 points, complemented by nine rebounds and three blocks. Megan Norris contributed her fourth double-double of the season, securing 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Evanne Turner chipped in with eight points and four assists.

ABOUT THE TRITONS
UC San Diego has had an up-and-down 2023-24 campaign that just suffered a massive hit when the Tritons were defeated by last-place CSUN. The Matadors snapped a 26-game losing streak with their overtime victory.

ABOUT THE BEACH
Despite sitting in the bottom half of the Big West standings, Long Beach State has enjoyed a solid second half of the conference schedule. The Beach have won four of their last six games, with one loss coming to first-place Hawai'i and the other coming in an overtime defeat to second-place UC Irvine.

SERIES NOTES
UC Davis has historically dominated the season series with UC San Diego, however, the Tritons earned a 65-63 victory over the Aggies in last season's meeting at the University Credit Union Center.

Davis' team holds a narrow 23-22 advantage over The Beach in the all-time series. Earlier this season, Long Beach State handed the Aggies a 78-52 defeat.

1,000 IN HER SIGHTS
Tova Sabel has scored 977 points in her career, leaving her just 23 short of the 1,000-point milestone.

TURNER REACHES 1,500 CAREER POINTS
Evanne Turner ascended to fourth on the UC Davis all-time scoring list, passing both Jessica Campbell and Staci Stevens. The Fontana native has 1,560 points for her career and will look to further climb the ranks as third-place Sydnee Fipps is in her sights with 1,636 career points. Turner is one of four players in UC Davis women's basketball history to reach the 1,500-point milestone.

PRESEASON POLL
The UC Davis women's basketball team was picked to finish third in the league standings, and received three first-place votes according to a vote by the league's coaches.

Coming off of their impressive 2022-23 seasons, Evanne Turner and Tova Sabel were selected to the Big West Preseason Coaches' Team.

BAUGH JOINS COACHING STAFF
Former WNBA player and Sacramento native, Vicki Baugh, joins Jennifer Gross' staff as an assistant coach. The Sacramento native was a standout for the University of Tennessee, reaching the NCAA Tournament in all four of her playing seasons with the Lady Volunteers.

She won a national championship with the squad in the 2007-08 season before battling injuries for the next two years. Baugh battled back to enjoy an excellent end to her collegiate career, leading her team to back-to-back SEC titles and Elite Eight finishes in the NCAA Tournament. In her senior season, Baugh capped off her career in the college ranks by leading the Lady Vols in shooting percentage.

HOME IS WHERE THE WINS ARE
The Aggies are now 84-17 on their home floor over the past five-plus years, winning 38 of their last 47 and posting a winning record at home in each of the last nine campaigns.

SVANHOLM RETURNS FOR SENIOR SEASON
Truly embodying the essence of the student-athlete is Lena Svanholm of UC Davis women's basketball. The forward has excelled tremendously off the court, as she was recently accepted into UC Davis' Ph.D program for Chemistry and Chemical Biology. Svanholm has announced that she will return for her 'last dance' in the 2023-24 campaign, becoming the only known active NCAA Division I women's basketball student-athlete to be enrolled in such a program.
