The short story:Â It came down to 15-15 in the fifth-set, and despite junior
Jade Light smashing a career-high 24 kills, UC Davis volleyball's nine-match winning streak came to an end at UC San Diego in a Friday night five-set marathon. Â
FIRST SERVE
- Light hit .222 on the night, breaking her previous career-high of 22 kills. She also added 13 digs and finished with 27 points
- Senior Olivia Utterback finished just below 20 kills, ending the evening with 18 total kills on .262 hitting. Utterback wrapped up with 22 points, after adding four blocks and 13 digs
- Sophomore setter Mia Starr finished with 47 assists, only committing one set error, and she had 11 digs to go along with four service aces
- Senior Julia Ng finished with a team-high 24 digs
- The Ags out aced the Tritons, finished with 11 service aces to UC San Diego's three
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UC San Diego used a late run, to catch and pass the Aggies over the final 11 points decided in the opening set
- The 25-22 Triton first-set win gave them a 1-0 lead in the match
- The Aggies returned the favor in the second set, taking the final four points to pull away from UC San Diego to take a 25-18 second set victory
- With things tied at 1-1, UC San Diego would take the third set, 25-14, forcing UC Davis to dig in for the fourth set
- Things got close down the stretch, and with the Aggies on set point at 24-21, UC San Diego nearly extended the set taking the next two points to make it 24-23
- But Light sent home a winning kill on a perfect set by Starr, and with the 25-23 fourth set victory a fifth and deciding set was in the cards
- UC Davis got to match point, following blocks by Utterback and sophomore Allie Caldwell, but UC San Diego took the next three points to pull away for a 17-15 fifth-set win and a 3-2 victory in the matchÂ
GAME NOTES
- Utterback now has 1,163 career kills, that places her seventh all-time in program history
- Utterback's 136 career aces places her second all-time in program history
- UC Davis sits at 9-2 in the Big West, remaining in first place in the conference
- The nine-match winning streak was the longest by an Aggie squad since 2011
- The Aggies had won nine-straight Big West matches, a school Big West record
