Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Aggies Reject Mustangs In Four-Sets; Get First Win Over Cal Poly Since 2015

Score:  UC Davis 3, Cal Poly 1
Set Scores: 25-23, 25-14, 19-25, 25-17
Location: San Luis Obispo, Calif. (Mott Athletics Center)
Records: UC Davis 7-5 (2-1), Cal Poly 9-5 (2-1)

The short story: Sophomore Allie Caldwell's defensive dominance at the net, coupled with senior Olivia Utterback's high flying 19 kills powered UC Davis volleyball to its first win over Cal Poly since 2015, taking down the Mustangs in four sets.

FIRST SERVE
  • Utterback hit .300, adding four blocks of her own along with 11 digs
  • Caldwell led the Aggies with six blocks, adding a pair of kills
  • Sophomore Mia Starr again ran a strong Aggie offense, finishing with 34 assists, adding five digs and one block
  • The Aggies finished with 10 blocks, the most in Big West play this season
  • UC Davis held Cal Poly to a anemic .065 hitting percentage over the four sets
  • The Aggies have now won two-straight Big West games
WHAT HEAD COACH DAN CONNERS HAD TO SAY
"Tonight the team was clicking. We were dialed in defensively and putting continuous offensive pressure on Poly. Certainly a team victory with contributions from all players and Liv leading the way with 19 kills hitting .300."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Until late in the opening set, it seemed that the evening could go either way, and as late as 22-19, the Aggies were trailing
  • But following a Cal Poly service error, Utterback took the serve and over the next three points, thanks in part to an ace from Utterback, the Aggies retook the lead at 23-22
  • Despite Cal Poly tying things up at 23-23, a Mustangs service error was followed up by sophomore Ally Chandler sending home a set winning kill, locking in the 25-23 first set Aggie victory
  • The second set would not need as much time to be decided as the Aggies took control before either team had 10 points
  • At 9-8, Starr took the serve, and the Aggies would not give back control of the serve for the next eight points
  • Over the stretch, Utterback took over recording two kills and two blocks to account for at least four of the Aggies eight points scored over the stretch
  • When Cal Poly finally scored again the Aggies had built out a 17-9 lead
  • And after the score hit 18-13, Cal Poly would score just one more time as the Aggies put their foot down, again getting big production from Utterback who had a pair of kills and one block over the Aggies set winning stretch
  • Chandler again ended the set, smashing home a kill to wrap up a 25-14 second set Aggie win
  • Cal Poly would use a late third set run to pull ahead and eventually take the third set 25-19, forcing a fourth set
  • As late as 15-15 things were tied up, but an Aggie four-point run to make it 19-15 gave them a bit of space to operate in
  • And after it hit 21-17, the Aggies put the finishing touches on the evening
  • Junior Makena Morrison placed an ace on the Cal Poly side to wrap up the first win for the Aggies against Cal Poly in 15 tries
UP NEXT: The Aggies remain on the road as the head to UC Santa Barbara for a Saturday Big West matchup starting at 4 p.m.
