WHAT HEAD COACH DAN CONNERS HAD TO SAY
"The team played well tonight. They executed our defensive plan very well and were aggressive offensively. Mia [Starr], again, ran a very balanced offense and because of that we had four players with double digit kills and Liv [
Olivia Utterback] led the way with 21 kills. It was a great team effort, especially from the service line, and we really did a good job of keeping them very off-balance."Â Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Late in the opening set, the Aggies mounted an ill-fated comeback. But it would be a sign of things to come as after the 25-22 first-set loss the Aggies would not fall again
- At 16-16 in the second-set UC Davis began to create space, getting solid service from Light who nailed back-to-back aces to make it 18-16
- The strong service from Light was enough to springboard the Aggies to a second-set 25-21 win and a tie match at 1-1
- In the longest set of the match, both sides wrestled for control of the match. Each ripping off multiple point runs, answering blow for blow until it was 23-23
- Chandler smashed home a kill to make it 24-23, but the next points fell the Rainbow Wahine's way
- A Hawaii kill gave them set point and a 26-25 lead, it's as close as they would get to winning a set for the remainder of the action
- Diersbock ended the Hawaii set point and after a Hawaii attack error, Utterback smashed home a set winning kill to give the Aggies a 28-26 third set win
- With a 2-1 lead, after outlasting Hawaii in the third set, UC Davis made sure that there would be no fifth-deciding set
- Despite Hawaii coming out strong over the opening 20 points decided, the set was knotted up at 10-10
- Starr's service over the next handful of points allowed UC Davis to build out a 15-11 lead, one they would hold until the end of the set
- Hawaii would get as close as 18-16, but an offensive onslaught of six Aggie kills over the seven points finished off the fourth set, 25-17, and locked down the historic Aggie win.
UP NEXT:Â The Aggies remain on the road and in the Big West with a weekend trip to Cal State Bakersfield on Oct. 17 and an Oct. 19 visit to CSUN.
