LAST WEEK
It was just a one-game week for UC Davis and the Aggies made the most of it, grabbing a 62-49 win over UC San Diego in La Jolla, making it six wins in the last seven games.

The Aggies (10-9, 6-3 Big West) held the Tritons (8-12, 4-5 Big West) to just 31.7% from the field just 49 points in the contest, the fourth time Jennifer Gross' defense has held an opponent under 50 points this season.

The duo of Evanne Turner and Megan Norris proved to be the focal point of UC Davis' scoring attack, dropping 12 points each to lead the team. Turner went scoreless in first half action but started to find her stroke when she buried a couple three-pointers in the early minutes of the third quarter to power a dominant second-half display for the Aggies. Coming up with a game-high seven rebounds was Norris, pouring 12 points as the center continues her excellent sophomore season.

ABOUT THE GAUCHOS
Sitting a half-game off the top spot of the Big West standings is UC Santa Barbara, who have won five of their last six games. The Gauchos have been dominant on their home court (9-1) but have proven to be vulnerable on the road at just 3-4 in true road games.

Led by Alexis Whitfield (15.5 ppg), UCSB brings the conference's best offense (68.5 ppg) into this weekend. Whitfield has also dominated the glass in her senior season with a conference-high 9.2 rebounds-per-game

ABOUT THE MUSTANGS
One of the surprises of the season has been Cal Poly, led by second-year Head Coach Shanele Stires. The Mustangs were just a game out of first place until their recent forfeit this Thursday due to insufficient players.

Natalia Ackerman has developed into one of the Big West's most dominant players in the post, as she nearly averages a double-double (11.9 ppg, 8.1 ppg)

SERIES NOTES
UC Santa Barbara picked up a 60-49 win earlier this season, but the Aggies still lead the all-time series 27-22.

Cal Poly snapped a 15-game losing streak against UC Davis with its victory in December. The Aggies have historically enjoyed great success, leading the all-time series 40-24 against their rivals from the south.

SERVING IT UP
Sydney Burns has emerged into one of the conference's top point guards as she leads the Big West in assists (81) and assists-per-game (4.3). The Wilsonville, Ore. native is third in assist/turnover ratio (1.6).

RED HOT AGGIES
UC Davis has won six of its last seven games, enjoying a five-game win streak from Jan. 4-18.

MOVING UP THE RANKS
Last week, Evanne Turner ascended to fourth on the UC Davis all-time scoring list, passing both Jessica Campbell and Staci Stevens. The Fontana native has 1,457 points for her career and will look to further climb the ranks as third-place Sydnee Fipps is in her sights with 1,636 career points.

PRESEASON POLL
The UC Davis women's basketball team was picked to finish third in the league standings, and received three first-place votes according to a vote by the league's coaches.

Coming off of their impressive 2022-23 seasons, Evanne Turner and Tova Sabel were selected to the Big West Preseason Coaches' Team.

BAUGH JOINS COACHING STAFF
Former WNBA player and Sacramento native, Vicki Baugh, joins Jennifer Gross' staff as an assistant coach. The Sacramento native was a standout for the University of Tennessee, reaching the NCAA Tournament in all four of her playing seasons with the Lady Volunteers.

She won a national championship with the squad in the 2007-08 season before battling injuries for the next two years. Baugh battled back to enjoy an excellent end to her collegiate career, leading her team to back-to-back SEC titles and Elite Eight finishes in the NCAA Tournament. In her senior season, Baugh capped off her career in the college ranks by leading the Lady Vols in shooting percentage.

HOME IS WHERE THE WINS ARE
The Aggies are now 81-16 on their home floor over the past five-plus years, winning 35 of their last 44 and posting a winning record at home in each of the last nine campaigns.

THREE-POINT QUEEN
By netting her 196th career three-pointer on Jan. 16 against UC San Diego, Evanne Turner broke the UC Davis program record for three-point field goals. Lori Hurlburt held the previous record, making 194 from 1997-2001. She has made 268 for her career and continues to extend her lead at the top of the list.

SVANHOLM RETURNS FOR SENIOR SEASON
Truly embodying the essence of the student-athlete is Lena Svanholm of UC Davis women's basketball. The forward has excelled tremendously off the court, as she was recently accepted into UC Davis' Ph.D program for Chemistry and Chemical Biology. Svanholm has announced that she will return for her 'last dance' in the 2023-24 campaign, becoming the only known active NCAA Division I women's basketball student-athlete to be enrolled in such a program.
