Lackey against Stanford

Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Aggies Secure First-Ever Road Win at Stanford in 2-1 Victory

Stanford, Calif. — In a gripping West Coast showdown, the UC Davis field hockey team captured their first conference win of the season and first road win at Stanford in program history, downing the Cardinal 2-1 at Varsity Field Hockey Turf.

During the first half of play, UC Davis seemed to be in control of the run of play, generating four corner attempts and six shots, but to no avail.

The game would spring to life in the third period at the 32:06 mark when UC Davis' Lizzy Tedrow took control, delivering an unassisted goal from 18 yards out, leaving Stanford's goalkeeper no chance. A moment of sheer precision and determination saw UC Davis take the lead early on the road. After no scoring in the first half, Tedrow's goal jumpstarted both teams' offenses and gave way to an exciting final 30 minutes of play.

Stanford wouldn't go down without a fight as the Cardinal responded in the 44th minute, with Ella Ganocy leading the charge. Her unassisted goal from 12 yards out provided the Stanford faithful with a glimmer of hope after leveling the score at one apiece.

With the match tied at 1-1, the fourth period promised more excitement. At 47:33, UC Davis delivered a perfectly executed Aggie corner. Shannon Lackey's insert found its way to Beth Munro-Morris before Liselotte Koop fired a perfect shot that just found the edge of Tedrow's stick before finally finding the back of the cage. A textbook corner by all means, the Aggies with the late goal squandered any momentum the Cardinal had from their previous goal and would seal the 2-1 victory.

The Aggies used a balanced attack today to come out on top. In a game where seven different Aggies recorded shots, UC Davis didn't fully commit to the offensive side of things as the backline limited many of the Stanford counter-attack efforts. Helping orchestrate things defensively while also adding five saves, Sarah Lopez played a key role in holding the Cardinal to just one goal today while the likes of Mia Edwards, Brenna Brophy, Liselotte Koop, and Zoe Mohrman, were the primary disruptors of all the Stanford scoring chances.

UP NEXT
The Aggies will have an extended rest period, with their next game taking place on Friday, October 6 as the Aggies travel to Albany. UC Davis will return to the Aggie Field Hockey Facility one last time on Saturday, October 14.
