Aggies Head to Fullerton for Big West Track & Field Championships

DAVIS, Calif. – The UC Davis track & field team will head to the Titan Track Complex in Fullerton, Calif., for the Big West Track & Field Championships this weekend. The two-day meet will begin on Friday, May 12 and a champion will be crowned on Saturday, May 13.

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
The Aggies hosted the championship last season at the women eclipsed 100 points to finish fourth overall at 100.50. The men capped off the championship weekend with a sixth place showing, compiling 50 points. The Aggie women last won a conference title in 2016 and won three straight from 2012-14. The men own four top-three finishes and their best finish was a runner-up showing in 2011.

Last season the Ags claimed four individual conference titles. Matthew Okonkwo blistered the curve in the 200m to defend his title with a wind-aided 21.08. Sierra Atkins won the 5,000m with a time of 16:42.76 and Women's Field Athlete of the Meet Marlene Gutierrez won the hammer with a school record mark and the shot put on day one.

THE FIELD
All 10 Big West programs will be participating in the 2023 championship. On the men's side in the West Region rankings, Long Beach State checks in at No. 8, back-to-back Big West champions Cal State Fullerton are at No. 10, UC Santa Barbara ranks 17th, CSUN is at 21st, UC Irvine checks in at No. 24 and UC Riverside rounds out the conference at No. 25.

On the women's side, the Aggies are ranked No. 23 in the region. Pacing the conference is Long Beach State at No. 14, UC Riverside at No. 17, Hawai'i at 19th, UC Irvine at 21st and Cal Poly at 24th.

PERFORMANCE LIST LEADERS
The Aggies head to Championship Weekend with a few marks atop the Big West's performance list. Entering the championship, Brianna Weidler paces the conference with her school record time of 15:48.57 in the 5,000m. In that event, the Ags sport three in the top-10. Kerrington Smith leaped her way to a school record in the triple jump with a league-leading mark of 41-3.75 (12.59m). In the high jump Elizabeth Churchill enters the meet with the second-best mark with a clearance of 5-9.25 (1.76m). The Ags showcase four of the top-6 jumps in the event. Chelsea Day sports the second-best mark in the long jump with a leap of 19-8.75 (6.03m).

AGGIE EVENT RANKINGS
The UC Davis women's high jump squad ranks 14th in the country, first in the Big West and second in the region. The Ags boast five jumps of 5-7.00 or above. Freshman Elizabeth Churchill paces the Aggies with a clearance of 5-9.25, which ranks tied for third in the record book.

Led by school record holder Brianna Weidler, the women's 5,000m unit ranks 34th in the country with a composite time of 16:27.69. Weidler broke the school record and eclipsed the 16-minute mark for the second time this season when she clocked a 15:48.57 at the Bryan Clay Invitational. On top of Weidler, three current Aggies have posted top-10 marks in program history. Sierra Atkins will toe the line as the defending Big West Champion.

NEXT TIME OUT
The Aggies that qualify for the NCAA West Prelims will not have to travel far as Sacramento State will be the host site this year. The prelims will be held from May 24 – 27 at Hornet Stadium.
