Smithfield, RI. — A Sunday morning thriller saw the UC Davis field hockey team drop a double-overtime contest to Bryant University in the team's season finale, 2-1 in Smithfield, Rhode Island.
The day served as a departing game for the amazing Aggie senior class:
Brenna Brophy,
Shannon Lackey,
Lizzy Tedrow, and
Maddie Kellner who all contributed to making UC Davis Field Hockey a better program over their careers here. Through their leadership, dedication and commitment they are leaving the program in a better place and with an excellent education.
Playing inspired, the senior Aggies left it all out on the field. It was the dynamic duo of Lackey and Tedrow who joined together to give the Aggies a goal in the 51st minute of action, responding to an early Bryant goal from Brittany Gouws to draw the match even at 1-1 in the third period.
Tedrow wrapped up her brilliant career at Davis, setting up impact senior transfer,
Shannon Lackey to provide a picture-perfect goal in their final collegiate game of their careers.
Tightly contested all-game, Sunday's match was even on both sides of the ball, with each the Aggies and the host Bulldogs recording four shots on goal. Disrupting these shots from the opposition was
Emma Giesting who made her first career start. Giesting would record two saves on the day, giving her a total of 20 saves on the season.
Some notable shots offensively for the Aggies came right after the goal from Lackey in the third period with
Skylar Richards having a good-look saved in the 32nd minute off the heels of a penalty corner, while
Liselotte Koop fired one just wide before the buzzer sounded.
Much of the back-and-forth action would play its way into the fourth and the fans in Rhode Island would be entertained with some over-time field hockey.
The Aggies best chance in over-time came from Tedrow in the 67th minute as she got into the Bulldog backline and fired away before having it saved by Dieneke Hes, the Bryant keeper.
The game would continue through the first over-time period knotted at 1-1 but the Bryant Bulldogs would eventually capitalize early in the second set of extra-time, scoring just 22 seconds into final frame of action, securing the win on their home turf.
UC Davis field hockey concludes the year with a 2-14 record and 1-7 mark in conference play. The Aggies secured a statement win in their lone America East win against Stanford in Palo Alto for their first ever program win on the road against the Cardinal.
