AUBURN, Calif. – A pair of UC Davis men's golfers advanced to the Final Qualifying for the U.S. Open Championship after 18 holes held at the Ridge Golf Club on Monday. Senior Thomas Hutchison won the local qualifier with a 1-under 70, while sophomore Mark Stephens used a playoff to advance with a 1-over 72.
Hutchison responded after a bogey on the par-5 second with a birdie on the par-5 fifth and sealed the qualifier with another birdie on the par-3 12th to finish as the only player under at the par-71, 6,676-yard Robert Trent Jones, Jr. course.
Stephens fired an even-36 on the front nine but carded a bogey on the par-4 18th to move into a tie with four others, including sophomore Lucas Carper, who just missed out on the final qualifying spot. Carper birdied the par-3 fifth and also matched Stephens with an even-36 on the front.
The Aggies will compete in the NCAA Stockton Regional, beginning on Monday, May 16 at The Reserve at Spanos Park.
Auburn was one of 109 sites in 44 U.S. states and Canada, to play hosts between April 25-May 23. Those players who advance out of local qualifying will join a group of locally exempt players in final qualifying, which will be conducted over 36 holes. The final stage will be held in Japan and Canada as well as nine U.S. sites on May 23 and June 6.
To be eligible, a player must have a Handicap Index® not exceeding 1.4, or be a professional. There are 14 local qualifying sites in California, the most of any state. Florida will host 13 local qualifiers.
