Thomas Hutchison fired a 6-under 66 to finish in a three-way tie for third, helping lead the UC Davis men's golf team to an 11th place finish after day one at the 31st annual Amer Ari Invitational at the Hapuna Golf Course in Waimea, Hawai'i, on Thursday.
Tied for the top spot at one point on the day, Hutchison stands just one shot off the lead of Arizona State's duo of Mason Andersen and James Leow, who opened with identical rounds of 65 to open play. As a team, UC Davis finished with a 5-under 283, standing one shot back of San Jose State, TCU, and North Carolina, in a tie for eighth.
The Sun Devils lead the tournament after round one thanks to a 20-under 268.
Hutchison finished with seven birdies (tied for fourth in the tournament after 18 holes) and a single bogey on the day en route to his 66, posting his team-best sixth round in the 60s this season and his 11th round at par or better in 2021-22. After starting on the eighth hole, the San Jose, Calif., native finished at 4-under for the back nine and bounced back from a bogey on the par-four first hole to card three straight birdies.
Sophomore
Lucas Carper joined Hutchison under par on day one, firing a 2-under 70 -- including an eagle on the par-4 second hole -- to finish in a tie for 32nd.Â

Jacob Westberg followed with a 1-over 73 to finish in a tie for 69th, sophomore
Mark Stephens shot a 2-over 74 for a tie for 78th, and sophomore
Alejandro Nava shot a 3-over 75 -- finishing second on the team with four birdies Thursday -- to end the day in a tie for 89th.
