QUOTABLE - HEAD COACH JIM LES
•
On the Aggies play so far this season: "When we execute on both ends of the floor, we've done some good things. We've gotten some leads. Consistency and sustaining it is what we've got to strive towards."
•
On the Aggies' three point shooting after going 3-18 against LBSU: "We talked about that as a staff. It's hard to fault some of the things we're doing because we were getting some great looks. I know a lot of times we as coaches want to overanalyze but at the end of the day it's making and missing. And we had some good looks with the right guys shooting that I would say you know what, we're going to live and die with that...Another day and I think the result changes."
•
On the Aggies' difficult early BWC schedule: "I told the team, nobody's going to feel sorry for us. One, we're grateful to play games and we've got to get into some game rhythm. Some of the growing pains we're going through has a lot to do with being able to play and develop some rhythm and have some in-game situations that we can learn from and grow from. The second part is this group has a great attitude and a really good work ethic. The character of this team is really good and as a staff knowing what we're dealing with with some of the outside things we can't control is saying hey, we've just got to continue to stay on pace to build and get better and grow as this year goes on. I think before it's all said and done, this is going to be a really good basketball team."
KEYS TO SUCCESS
There are a few areas that have been key to success for the Aggies this season that they'll try to get back to against the Highlanders:
• Though the Aggies are now 5-2 on the season when having four players score in double figures, that statistic is coupled with the reality that UC Davis is playing with close to a full bench for the first time since Dec. 22 against Portland.
Jan. 27 against Cal State Fullerton was the first time since that Dec. date that the Aggies had more than eight players available and the rising comfort level of that group will be important.
• The Aggies are now two games removed from a four-game stretch in which they turned the ball over 10 times or less per game. They've committed 29 over their last two games that have turned into 27 opponent points.
UC Davis have overwhelmingly committed those turnovers in second halves of this two-game stretch with 10 of their 16 against Cal State Fullerton and 7 of their 13 against Long Beach State coming the second.
Even with Saturday night's total, UC Davis still has the 13th fewest turnovers in the country.
• The Aggies reversed a recent trend at the free throw line by shooting 70 percent from the charity stripe for the first time since Jan. 8 but one of the stingiest teams in the country at committing fouls struggled in that department against Long Beach State.
Though UC Davis went 14-20, the Beach were in the bonus before the midway points of the first and second halves and went just 20-32 at the line.
UC Davis have committed the 24th fewest fouls in the nation.
• The Aggies have not allowed an opponent to shoot over 40 percent from the three-point line in four straight games.
• UC Davis has outrebounded its opponents in five straight games but are 2-3 over that stretch.
They're averaging 11.8 offensive rebounds over that stretch but just 9.6 second chance points per game with just nine second chance points combined in losses to Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State.
ANIGWE ON THE BOARDS
Christian Anigwe had career highs in points and rebounds against Cal Poly but it was his effort on the boards that set him apart.
Single-game offensive rebounds aren't a historically tracked stat, but since they began to be statted in the Division 1 era beginning in 2007, none had more than Anigwe's nine offensive rebounds at Cal Poly.
One possible candidate that could have surpassed nine offensive rebounds would be Dominic Callori's school record 24 rebounds at Sonoma State on Feb. 16, 2001.
At his current pace, Anigwe could end up with one of the highest offensive rebounding totals in recent program history.
With six offensive boards against CSUN on Jan. 20 and eight more against Cal State Fullerton, Anigwe has 23 over his last three games. Even with exiting due to injury with two offensive rebounds on Jan. 29 against Long Beach State, Anigwe is still 53rd in the country in offensive boards per game with 2.93.
CAREER WATCH LISTS
Manjon is also within striking distance of a career milestone in his third NCAA season.
At 890 points, Manjon needs 110 more to reach 1,000 career points. Manjon's career-high point total for a single season came in 2019-20 when he scored 388 points behind Aggie great
Joe Mooney's 419.
Manjon would need to average just 11 points per game over the Aggies final 10 regular season games to accomplish that feat this season.
Pepper is the next closest Aggie at 769 career points. His career-high of 278 also came in 2019-20, though Pepper is already over halfway to that total this season.
23 Aggies have reached the 1,000 point milestone with the last being Siler Scheider scoring 1,440 from 2015-19. Should Manjon reach that mark this season, he would be one of just five Aggies to score 1,000 points or more in their first three seasons.
DYNAMIC DUO
Pepper and Manjon are the two highest ranking teammates on the Big West scoring list with Pepper coming in at 6th with 15.1 points per game and Manjon 8th at 14.0.
No other team in the Big West Conference has two players higher than both in the top 11 in scoring.
They're also one of just two pairs of teammates in the Big West with three or more 20-point games.
