OPENING TIP
It's a new week but it's much the same story for the Aggies as the Big West schedule rolls on in fits and spurts for UC Davis.

Having finally been able to play an official conference game on Jan. 15 at Cal Poly, the Aggies will play consecutive games for the first time since Dec. 19 and 22 when they take the court in Northridge to face CSUN on Thursday evening.

Late Wednesday afternoon, UC Santa Barbara announced that they would be forced to cancel its game against the Aggies in Santa Barbara on Saturday, Jan. 22.

That cancelation gave the Aggies a conference-high five Big West games lost to COVID-19-related cancelations.

They have been able to play the fewest games in the conference at just one as some of their early Big West opponents were among the first to begin experiencing COVID issues this season.

After a win over UC San Diego on Jan. 8 when the Aggies were down to just seven players themselves, Thursday's game will be about reclaiming the energy and intent the Aggies had in that game.

With more players available at Cal Poly on Jan. 15, the Aggies nearly overcame a 27-37 halftime deficit and tied the game at 52 with 8:26 to go in the game. UC Davis was unable to slow down Cal Poly's offense as the Mustangs outscored UC Davis 23-11 over the next 7:02 of game time.

It was the first time this season the Aggies allowed an opponent to score 80 or more points.

Christian Anigwe led the Aggies with career-highs of 20 points and 13 rebounds, including nine offensive rebounds. Elijah Pepper and Ezra Manjon each 16 points and Kane Milling added 12 points.

Series Record vs. CSUN
  • UC Davis trails 25-21Last CSUN win: 2/5/21, H - W, 80-77
  • Last UC Davis win: 2/6/21, A - W, 75-63
  • Series Streak: UC Davis +1

GAME CANCELATIONS
UC Davis will be playing its first set of consecutive games since Dec. 19 and 22 on Saturday due to COVID-19 game cancelations.

They have been able to play just two games since Dec. 22  due to opponent cancelations and are the only team in the Big West to have played just one conference game thus far.

KEYS TO SUCCESS
The Aggies committed just nine total turnovers in their previous two games and nearly matched that total in the first half against Cal Poly with seven. They committed just three in the second half though giving the Aggies their three lowest turnover totals of the season over their last three games.

After being minus in the rebounding battle over their first five games of the season, the Aggies have been minus just twice over their last seven and once in their last four after out-rebounding Cal Poly by four.

The Aggies have allowed two of their highest opponent field goal percentages over the last two games, winning against UC San Diego despite allowing the Tritons to shoot .500 and falling to Cal Poly's .490 night. UC Davis had not allowed an opponent to shoot over .431 in five straight games prior to those.

UC Davis has not shot above .400 from three in three straight games after shooting .471 or better in three of four prior to this stretch.

The Aggies will also look for improvement from the free throw line after Cal Poly went 26-32 to UC Davis' 7-12.

ANIGWE'S BIG NIGHT
Christian Anigwe had career highs in points and rebounds against Cal Poly but it was his effort on the boards that set him apart.

Single-game offensive rebounds aren't a historically tracked stat, but since they began to be statted in the Division 1 era beginning in 2007, none had more than Anigwe's nine offensive rebounds at Cal Poly.

One possible candidate that could have surpassed nine offensive rebounds would be Dominic Callori's school record 24 rebounds at Sonoma State on Feb. 16, 2001.

At his current pace, Anigwe could end up with one of the highest offensive rebounding totals in recent program history.

AWARDS SEASON
Manjon had himself a week to remember against Oregon State and Pacific.

The electric sophomore led UC Davis to wins over both with a career-high 27 against Oregon State and put in 20 against Pacific.

That netted him the Lou Henson National Player of the Week award from College Insider on Monday and Big West Player of the Week honors later in the day.

Manjon and Elijah Pepper are the only teammates to win Big West Player of the Week this season.

TEAM EFFORT
UC Davis is knocking on the door of replicating a rare feat they accomplished last season.

The 2020-21 season marked the first time since 2008-09 that the Aggies had four players average double figures scoring. The 2021-22 Aggies currently have four themselves between Elijah Pepper (15.3), Ezra Manjon (14.3), Christian Anigwe (11.6) and Caleb Fuller (11.4).

The 2008-09 Aggies were led by Vince Oliver, the brother of current Director of Basketball Operations Ryan Oliver, with 15.6 points per game.

CAREER WATCH LISTS
Manjon is also within striking distance of a career milestone in his third NCAA season.

At 839 points, Manjon needs 161 more to reach 1,000 career points. Manjon's career-high point total for a single season came in 2019-20 when he scored 388 points behind Aggie great Joe Mooney's 419.

Pepper is the next closest Aggie at 725 career points. His career-high of 278 also came in 2019-20, though Pepper is already over halfway to that total this season.

23 Aggies have reached the 1,000 point milestone with the last being Siler Scheider scoring 1,440 from 2015-19. Should Manjon reach that mark this season, he would be one of just five Aggies to score 1,000 points or more in their first three seasons.

DYNAMIC DUO
Pepper and Manjon are the two highest ranking teammates on the Big West scoring list with Pepper coming in at 4th with 15.3 points per game and Manjon 8th at 14.3.

No other team in the Big West Conference has two players higher than both in the top 12 in scoring.

They're also one of just two pairs of teammates in the Big West with three or more 20-point games.

THE LAST TIME IT HAPPENED
You'd have to go back to 2017 for the last time UC Davis defeated a PAC-12 team prior to Dec. 4 at Oregon State.

The Aggies took down Washington State 81-67 in Pullman on Dec. 2, 2017. TJ Shorts II scored 20 points as the Aggies jumped out to a 42-25 first half lead on the Cougars.

PEPPER HEATS UP
Elijah Pepper became one of just six Big West players to score 30 points or more on Dec. 1. Following that night's games, he was fourth in the conference in scoring at 16.2 per game. His six made threes against Pacific are tied for the most in a single game in the Big West this season.

CONFERENCE LEADERS
Pepper continues to rank highly in the conference in steals at 1.6 per game for third with Manjon close behind in seventh at 1.3 per game. As a team, UC Davis is fifth in the Big West at just under t seven steals per game.

Pepper is also third in the conference in three pointers per game with 2.3.

A SEASON OF FIRSTS
The Aggies started the season with an exhibition at William Jessup in Rocklin, Calif., the first NCAA Division I team to visit the NAIA school's campus due to the teams playing for charity to benefit the Red Cross and Dixie fire victims.

Two games later, UC Davis played Pepperdine for the first time in school history. After Sunday against Academy of Art, the Aggies will also see UC Merced for the first time ever on Dec. 4.

On Dec. 14, UC Davis traveled to Oregon State for just the second meeting all-time with the Beavers.
