ERIN, Wisc. — Senior
Thomas Hutchison wrapped up his first collegiate event of the year with a podium finish on Tuesday afternoon, firing a final round 68 to leap into third place with a 12-under 204 and help the UC Davis men's golf team finish 10th at the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills.
Hutchison posted back-to-back rounds in the 60s en route to his final total, setting a new 54-hole tournament low for his Aggie career and edging his previous career low of 205 set during his win at the 2018 Windon Memorial. The 204 ranks tied for the fourth-lowest 54-hole total by an Aggie and is the lowest by a UC Davis golfer since Ryan Han shot the same total at the Alistar MacKenzie Invitational in 2018.
It was the San Jose, Calif., native's 13th career top-10 finish, ranking his in a tie with Scott Gordon (2001-04) for sixth on the all-time list, and his 23rd career round in the 60s, tying him with Luke Vivolo (2011-12, 2013-16) for third on the school's all-time list.
Starting on the 10th hole on Tuesday, Hutchison finished 3-under on the back nine and opened the front with back-to-back birdies on the first and second holes. A bogey on three and six brought the senior back down to Earth, but Hutchison finished with a birdie on seven to finish the front at 1-under and 4-under overall on the day.
He was one of five individuals who bettered the previous tournament record of 206, finishing just two shots off the pace of individual champion Walker Lee of Texas A&M, while Hutchison's 20 birdies set a new tournament record.
Sophomore
Lucas Carper ended his tournament with his second straight sub-par round, firing a 3-under 69 to finish with a 2-under 214 and a tie for 29th. The reigning Big West Conference individual champion posted birdies on the 14th, first, and seventh holes, while playing bogey-free golf on Tuesday, jumping 18 spots on the final leader board.
Sophomore
Jacob Westberg finished his first collegiate event of the year in a tie for 63rd with a 6-over 222, sophomore
Mark Stephens shot a final-round 73 for his best round of the week to finish in a tie for 76th, while sophomore
Alejandro Nava ended the tournament in 89th.
A quick turnaround for UC Davis sends the Aggies from Wisconsin to Colorado this weekend as they compete at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational hosted by the U.S. Air Force Academy beginning Friday (Sept. 10) and running through Sunday (Sept. 12).
