Three Aggies break par on day two at Erin Hills

Hutchison stands tied for fifth after 36 holes, just three shots off the lead

ERIN, Wisc. — Senior Thomas Hutchison made laboring on Labor Day look easy, firing a 6-under 66 to jump into a tie for fifth and standing as one of three Aggies to break par on Monday, helping the UC Davis men's golf team stand 11th after 36 holes of the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills.

Hutchison leapt eight spots into the top five after finishing at 2-under on Sunday, standing just three shots off the pace of leader Walker Lee of Texas A&M, who has fired rounds of 66 and 67 to stand at 11-under after two rounds and hold a one-shot lead heading into Tuesday's final round. As a team, UC Davis was 13 shots better than its opening round, finishing at 9-under for the day with a score of 279, but is chasing day two leader South Florida, which paces the field at 28-under and holds a three-shot lead.

A birdie on the opening hole got Hutchison off to a strong start, finishing the front nine with a 1-under 35, but the San Jose, Calif., native floored it on the back nine, shooting a 5-under 31 with birdies on five of the nine holes en route to his lowest round since shooting a 66 in the opening round of the Wyoming Cowboy Classic on April 8, 2019.

The Aggies' biggest mover on the day was sophomore Alejandro Nava, who fired a 3-under 69 to jump up 25 spots on the leader board into a tie for 56th at 2-over for the two days. Nava finished 2-under on the front and answered a bogey on 10 with birdies on the 11th and 14th holes to make his charge.

Sophomore Lucas Carper finished with three birdies on the day and ended the second round with a 1-under 71, moving up two spots into a tie for 47th at 1-over for the tournament. Sophomore Jacob Westberg finished with a 1-over 73 and stands tied for 44th at even par, while sophomore Mark Stephens was three shots better than his opening round 77 and is in a tie for 83rd at 7-over for 36 holes.

UC Davis tees off in day three of competition at 7:40 a.m. PT along with East Tennessee State and Notre Dame. Live scoring is available via GolfStat at http://results.golfstat.com//public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=participants&tid=23861.
