ERIN, Wisc. — UC Davis senior
Thomas Hutchison fired an opening round of 70 to finish at 2-under for the day and stand among the top 15 as the Aggies ended day one of the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills in a tie for 12th as a team on Sunday in Wisconsin.
UC Davis shot an opening round of 292 to stand tied with Minnesota and Ohio State, trailing leader Purdue, which shot a combined 13-under 275 to hold a three-shot lead after 18 holes. East Tennessee State's Mats Ege holds a one-shot individual lead after firing a 7-under 65 to edge Texas A&M's Walker Lee after day one.
Hutchison, tied for 13th after 18 holes, opened with birdies on three of his first five holes and cancelled out a bogey on 17 with a birdie on the par five 18th to finish the back nine at 3-under. Hutchison then birdied the first hole after the turn, but slipped back on the leader board after a bogey on the third and a double on the fourth, but rebounded with a birdie on the fifth before parring the final four holes.
Sophomore
Jacob Westberg was the only other Aggie under par on the day, standing in a tie for 20th following a 1-under 71. The Sacramento native posted a pair of birdies on the back nine to finish at 1-under, then had two birdies on the front en route to an even-par score.

Lucas Carper wrapped up day one in a tie for 29th with a 2-over 74, while
Alejandro Nava and
Mark Stephens shot opening-round 77s to stand in a tie for 81st.
