DAVIS, Calif. -- Punter
Daniel Whelan and cornerback
Jordan Perryman made the Fall All-America first and third teams, respectively, leading a total of 13 UC Davis honorees on Phil Steele's 2021 fall awards haul.
Additionally, Whelan, Perryman and offensive lineman
Nick Amoah made the publication's Preseason All-Big Sky Conference first team. Tight end
McCallan Castles, center
Connor Pettek, defensive tackle
Bryce Rodgers, nose tackle
Chubba Maae, linebacker
Cole Hansen, punt returner
Isaiah Thomas and long snapper
John Aloma each represent the Aggies on the second team, while guard
Jordan Ford, defensive end
Luka Nixon and kicker
Isaiah Gomez grabbed spots on the third team.
Whelan and Perryman also earned similar distinction on Phil Steele's Spring All-America squad, as announced in early June. Whelan led the Big Sky Conference with a 47.9 punting average, and would have led all FCS players had he posted one more attempt to meet the minimum qualifying standards. He also handled kickoffs and served as a holder during placekicks last season. Perryman recorded 16 tackles with two pass breakups and a forced fumble in the Aggies' five-game season last spring.
The Phil Steele awards continue a string of preseason honors during the lead-up to the fall football season. Castles, Whelan and Perryman each garnered HERO Sports Preseason All-America accolades earlier in the week, while Pettek, Rodgers and Whelan made the Big Sky Conference's official preseason all-league honor roll in July. Whelan, who won four All-America awards last spring, also snared acclaim from Athlon Sports, College Football America and Stats Perform during the 2021 preseason.
UC Davis opens its season at Tulsa on Thursday, September 2.
