No. 17/17 Mustangs Defeat Aggies in Dallas

DALLAS, Texas - No. 6 UC Davis football (2-1) fought until the final whistle on Saturday afternoon as No. 17/17 SMU (2-0) defeated the Aggies, 56-10, at Gerald J. Ford Stadium.

Jackson Kollock and Coby Herman both scored their first collegiate touchdowns in the contest, connecting on a four-yard strike at 11:18 in the fourth quarter.

STATS SPOTLIGHT: HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Treynor Cleeland found Samuel Gbatu, Jr. for six yards to give UC Davis its first first down of the game at 13:21 in the opening quarter, but the Mustangs held off the Aggies on their first drive. SMU proceeded to start the scoring (7-0) with an eight-play, 90-yard drive capped off by a touchdown from Kendrick Raphael at 6:39.
  • The Mustangs added to their lead with a three-play, 75-yard drive as the first quarter wound down, finished off by a 52-yard touchdown from Kevin Jennings to Derrick McFall to make it 14-0.
  • With 12:32 left in the second quarter, Jennings tallied his second passing touchdown of the afternoon as Theo Melin Ohrstrom scored to put SMU up three scores, 21-0.
  • Less than three minutes later, the Mustangs continued to roll with another two-yard touchdown from Jennings, this time caught by Randy Pittman Jr., to increase their advantage to 28-0 at 10:27.
  • In the final minute of the opening half, SMU found the end zone twice more, scoring with 58 seconds and 29 seconds to take a 42-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
  • Both offenses slowed a bit to open the second half, as the Mustangs did not score again until Ty Hawkins found Zach Turner from eight yards out to make it 49-0 in favor of SMU.
  • UC Davis scored their first points of the game on a pair of firsts as Minnesota transfer Jackson Kollock found Coby Herman on a four-yard touchdown at 11:20 in the fourth quarter.
  • Following another touchdown from Hawkins and SMU, Robert Meyer converted on a 33-yard field goal with 3:35 remaining to push the Aggies into double digits.
  • Both sides held steady for the remainder of the contest as SMU picked up its second win of the season by a final score of 56-10.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • The touchdown at 11:20 in the fourth quarter marked the first collegiate touchdowns for both Kollock and Herman. Kollock transferred to UC Davis after spending his freshman year at Minnesota, while Herman joined the Aggies as a true freshman out of La Costa Canyon High School in Encinitas, Calif.
  • Brayden Rosa finished with a career-high seven tackles against SMU, including tying his season-high with three solo tackles.
  • Four other Aggies recorded three solo tackles: Rosa, Drew Faulkner, Chaz Gilbreath, Teeg Slone, and Nick Afato. Faulker finished second on the team in total tackles with five.
  • Slone recorded the lone sack of the game for UC Davis, taking down Kevin Jennings for nine yards at 2:57 in the second quarter. He also led the team with two tackles for loss.
  • Jaden Few (1 TFL), Madruga (0.5 TFL), and Huegel (0.5 TFL) also each made their impact in the backfield.
  • Meyer, who is originally from Colfax, Calif., connected on his first field goal as an Aggie in the fourth quarter, which also marked the team's first field goal of 2026. He finished 1-for-2 on field goal attempts for the day.
  • Cleeland and Gbatu, Jr. connected for a 27-yard completion and a first down at 3:34 in the first quarter, the longest play on offense for UC Davis.
  • Saturday's contest marked the first meeting all-time between the two programs.
  • The contest also marked the finale of a three-game road stretch to begin the season for UC Davis, in which the Aggies went 2-1 overall (W at Portland State, W at San Diego, L at No. 17/17 SMU).
