DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis senior golfer Thomas Hutchison qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship, while sophomore teammate Jacob Westberg snared the first alternate spot at a qualifying tournament held at El Macero Country Club earlier this week.
Hutchison shot a 68 in Sunday's round followed by a 63 on Monday – highlighted by an eagle 3 on the fifth hole –to total a 13-under-par 131 for the tournament. He finished second in the field behind recent University of Arizona standout Christian Banke, who shot a 16-under 128. Westberg fired rounds of 70 and 67 en route to a 7-under 137 total to place third. The top two individual scores earn berths at the U.S. Amateur while the next two places are declared alternates.
This is the third straight trip to the U.S. Amateur for Hutchison, a fifth-year economics major from San Jose. He is also a former Big West Conference Freshman of the Year (2018) and Player of the Year (2019) honoree, plus a 2019 PING All-Region selection. Westberg earned a share of Big West Freshman of the Year accolades while adding a second-team All-Big West nod last spring.
The U.S. Amateur Championship will take place at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania on August 9-15.
