IRVINE, Calif. - Graduate student
Sydney Holmes scored UC Davis' first team points of the Big West Conference Track & Field Championships with her third-place finish in the heptathlon Saturday. She scored a career-high 4,698 points in the event, moving her up to fifth in the school record book.
Her placing also put up six team points on the standings for the Big West championship race. The heptathlon and decathlon ran Friday and Saturday, while the main meet will commence this Thursday. All events take place at UC Irvine's Anteater Stadium.
Holmes opened with a long jump of 5.53 meters, or 18 feet, 1.75 inches, on her second attempt. That was good for second place among the 10-person field, and 709 points toward her hep score. Holmes followed with a 34.85m (114-4) in the javelin, and a time of two minutes, 35.44 seconds in the 800-meter run.
This is the highest career Big West  finish for the 2020 neurobiology, physiology and behavior graduate. Holmes previously finished eighth and ninth in the event at the conference meet.
UC Davis now sits third in the overall team scoring on the women's side. The Aggies had no entrants in the men's decathlon. The Big West Conference championship resumes on Thursday.
