Carper wraps up day one at NCAA Regionals

In his postseason debut, Carper shoots rounds of 77 and 74 on day one in Oklahoma

STILLWATER, Okla. — UC Davis second-year freshman Lucas Carper shot rounds of 77 and 74 in his NCAA Regional debut on Monday, including an eagle two on the par-four 12th hole, wrapping up day one of play at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla.

Originally scheduled to play 18 holes over three days this week to open the postseason, Carper and the field in Stillwater played 36 holes on Monday with inclement weather in the forecast for the area on Tuesday. Based on the current forecast (as of 6 p.m. PT), officials have scheduled the final round to resume at 8 a.m. PT on Tuesday morning.

With a 36-hole total of 151, Carper stands at 7-over for the tournament and a tie for 50th place entering the final round. SMU's Noah Goodwin, the No. 10-ranked player the nation, leads the regional with an 11-under 133, firing rounds of 66 and 67 on Monday, while host and No. 4-ranked Oklahoma State leads the team competition by two shots over No. 9 Illinois at 17-under for the day.
The top five teams and the top individual not on an advancing team move on to the NCAA Championships at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., on May 28-June 2.

Carper's day started slowly, finishing 4-over on the front nine with a birdie on the par-four sixth hole, before picking up on the back side, carding a trio of birdies to finish 1-over on the back and a 5-over 77 overall in round one.

Following a short break, the mechanical engineering major from San Jose, Calif., played the front at even-par in his second go-round, draining a birdie on the par-five ninth hole to make the turn. Following a bogey on 10, Carper moved into the red for the first time on the day, chipping the ball on a bounce into the cup from 101 yards out for an eagle 2 on the par-four 12th hole to move to 1-under.
He then showcased his short game once again in the hunt for a second eagle on the 18th hole, lofting a wedge from between a pair of bunkers to within inches of the hole, closing out the day with a birdie and a second-round 74.
