CHANDLER, Ariz. — Four UC Davis golfers were under par following the first 18 holes led by true freshman
Alejandro Nava's career-low opening-round 70, helping the Aggies into a tie for seventh at the end of day one of play in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic at the Whirlwind Golf Club.
Monday's second round was halted due to darkness with golfers from half the field, including UC Davis, still to finish the final few holes of their second round. Play will resume on Tuesday (April 6) at 7 a.m. with the conclusion of the second round, immediately followed by the final 18 holes.
Nava's opening round 70 bested his previous collegiate low single round of 72 set during the second round at The Goodwin on March 26. The freshman recovered from a double bogey on the par-4 eighth hole to play the back nine at 3-under, including an eagle on the par-5 17th.
Returning freshmen
Jacob Westberg and
Lucas Carper, as well as returning junior
Thomas Hutchison, also finished under par for the opening round with identical rounds of 71, while returning sophomore
Daniel Kim opened with a 77.
With one hole to play in his second round, Kim has rebounded nicely, sitting at 3-under thanks to four birdies on the back nine, while teammates Westberg and Nava are at even par with two holes and one hole remaining in their respective second rounds.
At the close of Monday's play, Nava sits in a tie for 24th, followed by Westberg in a tie for 30th, Hutchison in a tie for 37th, Kim in a tie for 51st, and Carper in a tie for 79th, in the field of 120 competitors.
As a team, the Aggies' first round 283 is a season best, edging their third-round 284 at The Prestige to kick-off the season, and is the team's lowest since shooting 282 in the second round of the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills back on Oct. 7, 2019.
