Aggies reach new heights in Causeway dual

Española moves up school pole vault leaderboard; Atkins hits historic time at Fresno's West Coast Relays

DAVIS, Calif. -- Junior Jered Española and sophomore Katrina Meier won the men's and women's pole vault, respectively, with the former climbing UC Davis' all-time leaderboard for the event, highlighting the Causeway Track Classic dual meet with Sacramento State at the Woody Wilson Track at Toomey Field Friday night.

Meanwhile, down at the West Coast Relays in Fresno, second-year freshman Sierra Atkins placed sixth in the women's 5,000 meters with a time of 16 minutes, 26.47 seconds. That puts her fifth in school history, and gives her the best 5K time by an Aggie since Alycia Cridebring and Sarah Sumpter each set and reset the Aggie benchmark in the 2013 season. Atkins was joined by junior Brooke Starn, who ran a 16:39.49 in the meet.

Back in Davis, the Hornets ultimately swept the Aggies in the overall team scoring, with the Sac State men claiming a 94-75 victory and the women outscoring their hosts by a 103-78 final.

Española cleared the bar at 5.22 meters, or 17 feet, 1.5 inches, making him just the fifth Aggie in history to break the 17-foot barrier in the event. Meier went 3.82 meters (12-6.25) for a personal record, then opted the set the next height at 3.97m, with the hopes of becoming the fourth jumper in school annals to clear 13 feet. Unfortunately, she was unable to clear that standard, but won the meet title by almost exactly one foot.

Anthony Easter and Theo Goodwin each won double events for the UC Davis men. Easter captured the 110 hurdles (14.22) and 400 hurdles (52.69), while Goodwin posted PRs in each of the 100 (10.67) and 200 (22.06). The Aggie men also scored event wins by Corey Moore in the discus (48.99m, 160-8), Ivan Mendez clipped teammate Ryman Crone in the final stretch of the 5K (14:45.57), while Matthew Okonkwo both won the 400 (47.43) and led off the winning 4x400 relay (3:16.57).

On the women's side, Kathleen Bufka led a 1-2-3 sweep in the long jump with her 5.61m (18-5), Amelia Wiggs claimed the two-person competition in the high jump (1.55m/5-1), Marlene Gutierrez notched a winning shot put with a personal-record 14.40m (47-3), Chloe Arriaga edged teammate Brenna Wapstra Scott in the 1,500 (4:41.06). Gutierrez also improved her No. 5 spot in the school record book, besting the 14.33m (47-00.25) set earlier this season.

The Causeway dual served as the lone home meet of the COVID-affected 2021 season, and came with the volunteer assistance of the UC Davis athletics staff – including newly named director Rocko DeLuca. Numerous members of the Aggie women's swimming team volunteered at events, just hours after participating in the final practice under retired head coach Barbara Jahn. Friday's meet also provided a sendoff for the Aggies' senior class, which received framed jerseys during a ceremony prior to the running events.

The Aggies now prepare for the Big West Conference Championships. The multi-event competition runs on May 7-8, while the main championship meet will run from May 13-15. Both are hosted by UC Irvine.
