FRESNO, Calif. — UC Davis sophomore
Jackie Lucena shot her second round of 72 to finish at even par for the day and clinch a spot in the top 15, helping the Aggies finish sixth overall at the 2021 Fresno State Classic on Tuesday afternoon at the Copper River Country Club.
Opening on the par-five fourth, Lucena birdied the next two holes and was 1-under through the back nine before a bogey on No. 1 brought her even to finish with a 2-over 218 and a tie for 12th. Combined with her opening-round 72, Lucena has played four of her last six rounds at par or better and now has six such rounds this season to share the team lead along with senior
Madison Wood, who also finished at even-par for the day thanks to a trio of birdies.
Madison Wood jumped 13 spots into the top 25 with a 6-over 222 which placed her in a tie for 23rd.
The finish was Lucena's third in the top 15 this season — two of those falling within the top 10 thanks to a tie for eighth at the Gunrock Invitational and a runner-up finish at the Anuenue Spring Break Classic — while
Madison Wood posted her third top-25 finish in four tournaments this year, narrowly missing out on a fourth with a tie for 26th at the Juli Inkster at Meadow Club Invitational back on March 9.
Senior
Skyler Wood finished Tuesday by matching her best round of the weekend with a 74 to finish at 7-over 223 for the week, placing her in a tie for 27th, while teammates
Andrea Gomez Lloret and
Hannah Sun finished in a tie for 50th and a tie for 55th, respectively. Sun finished with a team-high four birdies on the day, helping her finish 2-under on the back nine.
Lucena ended the event with 42 pars over the 54-hole two-day event, ranking second among the tournament field, while
Skyler Wood's seven birdies matched Sun for tops on the team for the week.
Overall, UC Davis' round of 294 on Tuesday was its best of the tournament finishing 24-over as a team on the final leaderboard. Stanford won the event at 18-under, standing 29 shots clear of the host and runner-up Bulldogs. Individually, the Cardinal's Rachel Heck took home medalist honors by tearing up the course to the tune of a 16-under 200, outscoring USC's Brianna Navarrosa by six strokes for the win.
The tournament served as the final tune-up for the Aggies, who head to Southern California to compete in the 2021 Big West Conference Championships on April 19-21 at the Yorba Linda Country Club in Yorba Linda, Calif.
