Easter, Smith earn Big West weekly honors

Hurdler and triple jumper each claim second career Big West award

DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis junior Anthony Easter and true freshman Kerrington Smith captured Male Track Athlete of the Week and Female Field Athlete of the Week honors, respectively, as the Big West Conference announced its weekly awards slate for the weekend ending March 21.

This is the second such award for each Aggie student-athlete. Eastern won the honor almost exactly two years prior, on March 19, 2019. Smith won the same accolade in the first week of the 2021 season.

Easter, a former NCAA qualifier and a fourth-year psychology major from Eastvale, California, cut a sixth of a second off his previous PR with a 14.17-second time in the 110-meter high hurdles at the Hornet Invitational, winning the event and moving up to No. 6 in the school outdoor record book. His mark currently leads the Big West Conference and ranks 13th in the West Region.

Smith, a pharmaceutical chemistry major from Upland, won the second Field Athlete award of her young career, both times for performances set at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium. She placed fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 11.88 meters, or 38 feet, 11.75 inches, for her best wind-legal mark of the season. Smith leads the Big West Conference in the event with the 12.08m (39-7.75) jump from Sac State's Tri-Team Challenge on February 27. Her more recent 11.88 puts her 50th in the West Region rankings.

Long Beach State had the other two winners for the week, as middle distance runner Anitha Graves claimed the Female Track Athlete honor, while long jumper P.J. Tshiaba's 2.15-meter high jump won the nod over UC Davis Jered Española's 5.05m in the pole vault.

The Aggies enter a bye weekend from competition. They will return to action on April 2-3 with portions of the roster headed either to the Stanford Invitational or CSUN's Red & Black Invite.
