UC Davis finishes 11th at San Diego Classic

Carper in the top 25 following final round 72

CHULA VISTA, Calif. — Returning freshman Lucas Carper fired a final round, even-par 72 to post his fourth career top-25 finish and the UC Davis men's golf team wrapped up play at the 2021 Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic in 11th place on Wednesday afternoon at the San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista, Calif.

UCLA won the team title with a 4-over 868 over the three-day event, standing six shots clear of second-place Nevada and seven shots ahead of Washington in third place. The Bruins' Devon Bling, who led after 36 holes, took home individual medalist honors despite a final round 75 thanks to a 4-under 212, edging San Diego's Ryan Bisharat by a single stroke.

Battling a damp and rainy final round that featured only six rounds in the 60s, Carper's 72 led the UC Davis scoring group, rebounding from three early bogeys with birdies on the seventh, 11th, and 17th holes to finish 2-under on the back nine and place him in a tie for 23rd.

Returning junior Thomas Hutchison, who entered the day among the top 10, slipped into a tie for 33rd following his final round 78 at 6-over 222 for the tournament, while teammate Jacob Westberg was close behind in a tie for 45th following a 2-over 74 on Tuesday that featured an eagle on the par-5 second hole.

Freshman Alejandro Nava ended his second collegiate event in a tie for 55th after his second straight 76, leading the team with four birdies on the day and finishing at 10-over for the tournament, while returning freshman Mark Stephens ended in a tie for 97th, but carded a final-round 73 to end his tournament with a bang.

UC Davis returns to the course on March 25-27, taking part in The Goodwin hosted by Stanford at the Stanford Golf Course.
