SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Junior
Jered Española and sophomore
Marin Chamberlin won their respective pole vault competitions while
Kerrington Smith enjoyed a strong collegiate debut in the women's triple jump, highlighting UC Davis at Sacramento State's Tri-Team Challenge at Hornet Stadium Saturday.
The Aggies finished third on the women's side with 89 points, behind Nevada (121) and the host Hornets (108). On the men's side, UC Davis fell to Sac State in a dual competition, 77-65.Â
Chamberlin won a jump-off against teammate
Bianca Becker as one of four Aggies to clear 3.65 meters, or 11 feet, 11.75 inches. Chamberlin was a Sac Joaquin Section champion in the event as a senior at Placer High School, and originally came to UC Davis for cross country before making her pole vault debut at the 2020 Cal Invitational. Española, a 2019 NCAA West Prelim qualifier, cleared 4.70m (15-5) for the men's vault win.
Sierra Atkins led a crew of six Aggies in the women's 5,000 at 16 minutes, 51.03 seconds, while
Nicholas Brichta bested an all-UC Davis field in the men's 5K with a 14:48.54. Another former NCAA qualifier,
Anthony Easter, won an all-Aggie field in the 400 hurdles with a 54.45. College of San Mateo transfer
Quincy Daniels was the lone entrant in the men's javelin, which he won by default with a 43.49m throw (142-8).
Matthew Okonkwo was the lone UC Davis competitor in the 200-meter dash, but he edged a heat full of Hornets with a wind-aided 21.83. The sophomore psychology major also helped the 4x100 relay edge Sacramento State by a 42.79-43.03 margin. UC Davis added another relay win in the men's 4x400 at 3:22.71.
Smith finished second behind Nevada's Rayven Nealey in the women's triple jump, thanks to a 12.08m (39-7.75) mark. Unfortunately, there were no official wind readings for the attempt, but a wind-legal version would rank seventh in school history and represent the program's best performance since Catherine Li's school-record 12.53m at the 2014 Big West championships.
The Tri-Team Challenge served as the Aggie debut for more than a dozen student-athletes, including
Brooke Starn (women's 5K), a Harvard graduate now pursuing a master in public health; and
Amanda Mell (women's long jump), a first-year student at UC Davis' King Hall School of Law.
UC Davis returns to action for a rare midweek appearance: taking on UC Santa Barbara and host Cal State Fullerton for another triangular meet Thursday.
