Westberg second, Aggies seventh after day one of The Prestige

LA QUINTA, Calif. — UC Davis' Jacob Westberg fired an opening round 67 to finish at 4-under on the day and help the Aggies end day one of the 21st annual The Prestige in a tie for seventh on Monday at the Greg Norman Course at PGA WEST in La Quinta, Calif.

Starting on the par-four 10th hole, Westberg opened his day with a 3-under 33 on the back nine and added three more birdies on the front around a pair of late bogeys en route to his team-low score, matching Iowa State's Lachlan Barker and Pepperdine's Joey Vrzich in a tie for second.

Westberg's 67 is tied for the fourth-lowest single round by an Aggie at The Prestige

Arizona State's David Puig opened with a 7-under 64 to lead the field after 18 holes, tied for the second-lowest single round in tournament history behind the 63 shot by UC Davis' Austin Graham in 2008. Puig's Sun Devils lead the tournament by five shots at 8-under for the day, standing as one of four schools under par after the opening round along with Pepperdine (-3), North Carolina (-2), and Arizona (-1).

The Aggies, at 3-over after day one, are tied for seventh, 11 shots off the pace, but tied with Nevada and Southern California.

Thomas Hutchison is tied for 25th after Monday's first round following an even par 71, battling back from an early double bogey to card three birdies in a nine hole stretch, with newcomer Alejandro Nava in a tied for 53rd after firing a 2-over 73 in his collegiate debut. Mark Stephens fired a first-round 76 to stand at 5-over for the day, while Lucas Carper ended his first round at 11-over par.

Meanwhile, at The Prestige Individual Tournament at nearby Coral Mountain Golf Club, Pepperdine's Derek Hitchner took the day one lead after firing a 7-under 65, taking a three-shot lead over Wyoming Liam Clancy and Oregon's Jake Sollon.

The first three groups go off on holes one and 10 on Tuesday morning at 6:45 a.m. PT
