ALBANY, N.Y. -- Senior back
Audrey Matthew finished with a goal and an assist, ending the day as one of four Aggies to find the back of the cage on Friday, but host UAlbany survived a furious third-quarter flurry by the visiting side and held off UC Davis for a 5-4 America East Conference victory at Alumni Turf in Albany, N.Y.
The Aggies fell to 6-9 overall and 1-6 in league play with the defeat, but continued the offensive momentum from their 5-3 non-conference win over Stanford just three days earlier, scoring at least four goals in a match for the fourth time this year.
The Great Danes improved to 8-8 overall and 5-2 in America East play, receiving a hat trick from Alison Smisdom and a pair assists from Lara Mortz.
After trailing 4-1 at halftime, UC Davis found it's groove, coming all the way back to tie the match at 4-4 thanks to a huge third quarter.
Catherine Potente sparked the rally just five minutes into the period, netting her second of the year, while
Jordan Engdahl brought the Aggies to within one just two minutes later off a penalty corner for her first of the season to make it 4-3, with
Brooke Sanchez and Matthew recording assists on the play.
Lizzy Tedrow then brought UC Davis level at the 43:55 mark, scoring her fourth goal of the year on a reverse shot from the top of the arc to tie things up at four apiece.
The Aggies almost emerged from the third period unscathed, but the Great Danes had other ideas, striking for the winner off back-to-back penalty corners with no time remaining on the clock. UAlbany's first attempt off the stick of Floor de Ruiter was blocked out, giving the Great Danes another chance and Smisdom did not miss, scoring off the corner for the 5-4 advantage heading into the final 15 minutes.
In the fourth,
Shea Gavin had the only shot by either side in the period, but her attempt was turned away by goalkeeper Lara Behn just three minutes into the quarter, preserving the one-goal lead.
It took Smisdon only 3:36 to put UAlbany on the board first in the opening quarter, but the Aggies' quickly tied it up on Matthew's second goal of the season off an assist by
Milou Korthouwer three minutes later. The Great Danes regained the lead on goals by Charlotte Triggs (12:51) and Julie Rodijk (13:59) in the first, and Smisdon added her second of the match on a penalty stroke with 33 seconds remaining before halftime.
Tedrow,
Shea Gavin, and Sanchez, each finished with two shots apiece, while
Kalli Wagnon stopped six shots in goal for UC Davis, which closes out the regular season on Sunday morning (Oct. 31) at 8 a.m. at Monmouth.
